World-renowned ballet superstars from the prestigious Mariinsky Ballet, Renata Shakirova and Alexei Timofeyev, will be coming to Manila for a rare Philippine performance in the restaging of Ballet Manila’s Giselle set to happen at the Aliw Theater on August 31, 2024 at 8pm and September 1, 2024 at 5 pm.
This much-awaited collaboration with the Russian superstars of ballet once again highlights Ballet Manila’s artistry and keen eye for excellence in every production, by working with world-class performers – this time for Giselle. This very special collaboration was made possible by Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s artistic director and chief executive officer, and her close ties with the Mariinsky Ballet (formerly Kirov Ballet) where she also trained and became the first foreign soloist in the mid-80s. She shared, “The fact that we are collaborating with guest artists and star performers Renata Shakirova and Alexsei Timofeyev will always bring out the best in the company.”
With their star power, Macuja Elizalde couldn’t be more excited for their rendition of the well-loved Giselle. “I think that Renata’s true romantic style of dancing and the fact that she is dancing with her real-life prince Alexei is going to transform Ballet Manila’s Giselle to a Giselle of another level,” she adds. The world-renowned Russian dancers, incidentally, are married to each other in real life.
Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Renata joined Mariinsky Ballet, one of the leading dance companies in the world, upon her graduation in 2015 and was immediately given her first principal role as Kitri in Don Quixote. That same year, she was listed among the 25 to Watch by Dance Magazine. And in 2016, she competed in the Bolshoi Ballet Competition, where she won first prize.
Meanwhile, Leningrad-born Alexei joined Mariinsky Ballet in 2004 and is currently the soloist of the dance company. As a soloist, he managed to secure various awards under his belt, including prize-winner at the VII International Ballet Competition in Seoul in 2010; diploma-recipient at the XVI International Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Festival in 2010 where he was cited for his superb levels of professionalism and contribution to the development of ballet in the Republic of Bashkortostan; and diploma-recipient at the XI International Ballet Dancers’ and Choreographers’ Competition in Moscow in 2009.
While it is their first time to perform on the Philippine stage, Renata is looking forward to connecting with the Filipino audience through her performance. “What’s important to be able to connect with the audience, wherever they are, but especially with a Filipino audience, is to highlight the small nuances that are included in the performance, like the turn of the head or the eye-to-eye contact with your partner, so that the emotions in the story can be conveyed and that the audience can enjoy the show.”
Meanwhile, Alexei excitedly looks forward to performing in front of a new audience, as he noted, “We are feeling the good kind of vibes with the Filipino audience, and we want them to live the story of Giselle with us on stage. It’s going to be our first time, and we hope to share that special experience with all of them.”
The third offering of Ballet Manila’s 26th performance season, dubbed Ballet Masterpieces, Giselle is a classic love story of a village girl (Giselle) who falls in love with Albrecht, not knowing he is already engaged. When she finds out, she dies of a broken heart and becomes a wili, joining the souls of girls who are also wronged by their men. Meanwhile, Albrecht visits the grave of Giselle, who protects him from Myrtha, the vengeful queen of the wilis.
Complementing their performances is a dynamic ensemble made up of young and veteran dancers from Ballet Manila, which, according to Macuja Elizalde, is the main change for the restaging of Giselle. “Ballet Manila Corps de Ballet is made up of more young members who have just joined the company post-pandemic – standing side by side with Ballet Manila dancers who are “veterans” and have performed the ballet many times before.”
The two-act ballet will interestingly showcase the talents of real-life couples both on and off stage. Ballet Manila’s principal dancers Abigail Oliveiro and Mark Sumaylo will headline the performance on August 31 at 1pm while the world-renowned duo Renata and Alexei will take on the title roles on August 31 at 8pm and September 1 at 5pm.
All performances will be staged at Aliw Theater, Pasay City. For tickets, visit www.ticketworld.com.ph. To know more about Ballet Manila and its shows, visit www.balletmanila.com.ph
P-Pop royalty SB19 continues to captivate music fans from all over the world with the release of “GENTO” and “MAPA” from THE FIRST TAKE sessions on all digital music platforms via Sony Music Entertainment.
The new versions feature the award-winning group’s performance at THE FIRST TAKE, a popular YouTube channel with nearly 10 million subscribers under its belt. The show’s format features Japanese and international music guests performing a song in one take, filmed with shots of the artists and a microphone against a minimalist and usually white backdrop.
To date, THE FIRST TAKE renditions of “GENTO” and “MAPA” have amassed more than 4.5 million views on YouTube, becoming one of the most viewed performances from an Asian pop group/band.
“We’re eternally grateful to THE FIRST TAKE for giving us an opportunity to showcase our work on a platform known not just for its massive global following but for elevating the audio-visual experience of music fans with much-needed authenticity and rawness,” SB19 shares in a collective statement. “The performances really challenged us to work within our limitations and deliver with the best of our abilities. We’ve always considered performing as a sanctimonious process that deserves utmost preparation, love, and respect. Constantly reminded by THE FIRST TAKE that we can only perform the songs once, we had to reconnect with our roots and embrace the beauty of spontaneity.”
SB19 is the first Southeast Asian group and the first Filipino artist to be invited on the globally renowned platform, which also served as host to several acclaimed performances by other artists such as aespa, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Hitsujibungaku, MANESKIN, ITZY, (G)-I-DLE, imase, Maluma, and more.
For THE FIRST TAKE version of “GENTO,” SB19 delivered a genuinely compelling performance that highlights the five-piece act’s incredible talent and range in harmonizing, singing, and rapping.
The chart-topping hitmakers also took musicality on a different level with their rousing version of “MAPA,” which SB19 redressed with a soaring arrangement and an inspiring gospel-infused delivery.
Both versions are now available for streaming and are bundled with its original versions:
MANILA, Philippines – This August, Cetaphil invites you to embark on a journey to healthy skin at the National Healthy Skin Mission: Skin Academy. In partnership with Watsons and SM Beauty, the leading destination for skin care and beauty, Cetaphil is set to host this monthlong activation beginning on August 1, 2024, at SM Makati.
Did you know you can boost your skin’s 15 essential ceramides? These 15 ceramides will help maintain your skin’s moisture barrier, which is important because a healthy moisture barrier is essential for overall skin health and function. This protective layer acts as the skin’s first line of defense against environmental stressors, pollutants, and harmful microorganisms while also helping to retain moisture within the skin.
This year’s NHSM takes you behind the scenes of skin science, to learn more about ways you can improve your skin’s moisture barrier with the 15 essential ceramides, and to reveal how Cetaphil’s advanced formulations cater to a diverse range of sensitive skin needs.
In an age of online skincare misinformation, Cetaphil aims to cut through the noise with the Skin Academy. Viral, trending skin-care tips are bound to be based on anecdotal evidence or misconceptions. Without proper vetting by professionals, such advice can lead to harmful practices that damage the skin’s moisture barrier or exacerbate existing issues. These one-size-fits-all solutions often ignore the fact that skincare needs vary greatly among individuals based on specific concerns.
Additionally, following unverified advice might lead people to neglect essential skincare practices or abandon treatments prescribed by dermatologists. This can result in worsening skin conditions or delayed proper treatment.
That is why, for the Skin Academy, experts will be on hand to offer practical skin tips and share the latest in sensitive skin research on how to keep skin healthy with the full range of Cetaphil products (Cetaphil, Cetaphil Bright Healthy Radiance, Cetaphil Baby, Cetaphil Pro-AD and BENZAC) that can help you achieve up to 10x skin hydration after first use, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to science-backed skincare solutions.
Discover firsthand why Cetaphil remains the trusted choice for dermatologists and sensitive skin care users alike and don’t miss this opportunity to unlock the secrets of healthy, radiant skin. Your skin deserves the science-backed care that only Cetaphil can provide.
With your improved moisture barrier, you’ll notice that your skin looks more radiant and feels smoother.
His latest track serves as his first solo release since 2021’s “Metro”
Ely Buendia enters a new era of his solo music career with the release of “Bulaklak Sa Buwan.”
The fuzzy, alt-rock number serves as the first single off his upcoming sophomore album, Method Adaptor, which will be out on November 8, 2024, via Sony Music Entertainment and Offshore Music.
The track’s release coincides with the prevalence of fabricated stories and propaganda-driven atrocities in online spaces, challenging listeners to raise awareness for factual truth and combat misinformation.
“I’ve been watching documentaries a lot, and I tried to distill everything in one song,” the legendary Pinoy rock artist explains. “The track is all about the quest for the truth. It’s about seeking knowledge while resisting the confines of dogma.”
Sonically, “Bulaklak Sa Buwan” stands out without the need to constantly show off. The disarming pop gem continues Buendia’s knack for composure and effortlessness: his gift for melodies is still as sharp and instinctive as his best output with his previous bands, and his guitar work is still at its most ferociously sounding in over two decades.
Ely Buendia’s frequent collaborator and Pupil bandmate Jerome Velasco produced the song, delivering a pristine but straightforward production approach that doesn’t take away the material’s anthemic charm.
“I wanted it to be buoyant-sounding and surprising,” shares the award-winning OPM icon. “The song is very upbeat, and I utilized several modulation techniques to make it seem like the music goes higher and higher every time.”
“Bulaklak Sa Buwan” is accompanied by the release of a music video directed by Niko Cezar and Aimee Aznar of KNYA Collective. According to Ely, the visual narrative finds him wandering in the woods looking for a particular flower. “Upon finding it, I get into some upside-down vibes (like Stranger Things), getting transported into another dimension.”
The indie artist is also set to launch her back-to-back singles “Ang Nag-iisa” on September 13, 2024 and “Storm Like Me” on September 20, 2024

Filipino singer-songwriter Kai Del Rio (formerly known as Kai Honasan)gears up for an electrifying comeback with her first solo headline show in nearly a decade.
The former The Voice of the Philippines season 2 semi-finalist will perform her dual singles “Ang Nag-iisa” and “Storm Like Me” for the first time live on September 13, 2024 (Friday) at Sari Sari Bar in Makati City.
The back-to-back songs highlight Del Rio’s versatility and range, with “Ang Nag-iisa” (to be released on September 13, 2024) revealing her grittier version with blues and alt-rock influences and “Storm Like Me” (to be released on September 20, 2024) taking listeners back to her stripped-down roots.
Kai shares that both tracks have the same message and heart at the core of it all, but are musically different by intention.
“When I considered returning to my solo work, I always envisioned releasing a double single as a way to showcase my duality right off the bat. Nagagalit tayo at nasasaktan tayo. When you experience so much pain, you eventually experience hope. These two songs show the spectrum of rage and sadness and how it manifests differently within the same person.”
The official launch will not only include the performance of the new original songs, which Underdog Music will release on all streaming/digital platforms on September 13 and 20 respectively, but it will also serve as a reintroduction of the indie singer-songwriter, complete with a new moniker, a new record label and management team, and a fresh perspective on the music-making process.
“I took my time because I wanted it to be as real, as sincere and as authentic as possible,” the Liwanag act explains. “These will be my first solo songs in a decade and I wanted to take my time with them from crafting the songs to building the team. That included finding the right musicians, the right group to work with, the right time. Everyone who has worked on these two singles are authentic, decent, good people, but above all they are insanely talented.”

Kai Del Rio is co-producing the official launch alongside GNN Entertainment Productions and Locked Down Entertainment, with backing from Lightfirst and Underdog Music.
“For this reintroduction, trust and history were very important to me. Both the teams behind Gabi Na Naman and Locked Down have been there at the first few years of my career in the indie scene, after the Voice and my time in a band. They know my story and are equally as invested as I am, and I could not ask for more from partners in this first chapter. In addition to them, this event will also be co-presented by Lightfirst, which is a lovely company that focuses on helping make high quality educational content available to schools all over the Philippines.”
Kai promises that the show will be worth the wait, as she’ll be performing alongside some of her peers and idols in the local music industry, as well as playing with a special setup for the headline show happening next month.
“It’s very different from the ukulele or keytar girl you might have met before, but I hope you’re ready for the ride,” shares Kai. “It’s going to get real, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Tickets to KAI DEL RIO: “ANG NAG-IISA x STORM LIKE ME” Double Single Launch are now available on bit.ly/kaidrlaunch.

A strong culture of collaboration between government agencies and the private sector is the best way to significantly reduce the impact of financial cybercrime on our society. This was the pronouncement made during the recent financial cybercrime learning session organized by the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas-Payments and Currency Investigation Group, Philippine Center for Transnational Crime and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in collaboration with the country’s leading finance super app, GCash.
The event gathered experts from various government agencies, including the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), International Police Philippines, and Philippine National Police Anti-cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), who shared their insights and best practices in combating financial cybercrime.
“The sophisticated tactics employed by cyber criminals pose significant threats to our financial systems and personnel security. Addressing these challenges requires a united effort, and it is this spirit of collaboration that has brought us together today,” says GCash legal counsel Atty. Takahiro Kenjie Aman. “This lecture is part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard the public and fortify our defenses against financial cybercrime.”
Held at the Police Non-Commissioned Officers Association (PNCO) Club Cespo Building, Camp Crame in Quezon City, the event featured speakers from the DOJ, the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime, who each focused on the local and international procedures in investigating and apprehending cybercriminals, including cybercrime prosecution and litigation, investigation and attribution, data privacy perspective on cybercrime investigation and prosecution, and international coordination for cybercrime warrants. Speakers from GCash also shared about the innovative strategies and best practices that the company employs to safeguard its digital ecosystem.
“At GCash, we emphasize the importance of collective responsibility. Cybersecurity requires a united front and collaboration across all sectors to effectively combat cybercrimes. We believe that we should foster a culture of vigilance and cooperation among government agencies and the private sector and across industries so we can protect our digital space against evolving threats,” GCash chief information security officer Migs Geronilla. “This lecture is a crucial step in strengthening our collective efforts to protect the public and build a safer digital landscape.”
In one of the discussions on prosecution of financial cybercrime and digital evidence, Department of Justice – National Prosecution Service prosecutor Robin Landicho said that “If private stakeholders like GCash and other corporations do not lend a hand and cooperate, how can we get ahead in solving cases? There is often confusion about what data is all about, so it’s crucial for us to understand electronic evidence today. Cybercrime is borderless and does not recognize any territory, race, or gender.”
As the biggest digital ecosystem in the Philippines, GCash group data protection officer and head of regulatory technology Attorney Rob Real also highlighted its role in protecting users’ privacy and maintaining trust during financial cybercrime investigations.
“I hope we can understand the interplay of data privacy and financial cybercrime investigation. We have a lot of tools to combat cybercrime, and we need to understand its principles and considerations. By implementing robust data protection measures, balancing privacy with legal obligations, and maintaining transparency, GCash can effectively support investigations while preserving user trust and adhering to data privacy standards,” says Atty. Real.
In terms of addressing the legal and collaborative aspects of investigating and prosecuting crimes that occur in the digital realm, Attorney GV Sosa of the DOJ, Office of Cybercrime said “International cooperation and cyber warrants are crucial in tackling cybercrime. International coordination ensures that cross-border cybercrimes are effectively managed through collaboration and shared resources, while cyber warrants provide the legal basis for accessing digital evidence. Both elements are essential for building a comprehensive and effective response to the evolving landscape of cyber threats.”
During the event, GCash also shed light on the importance of leveraging advanced tools, investigation techniques, and attribution processes to combat cyber threats. This includes utilizing advanced technologies, like AI, big data analytics, and machine learning.
“Cyber threats continue to evolve, and in terms of cybercrime, we are all exposed. Cybercriminals are highly innovative, adaptable, decentralized, and anonymous. It’s crucial to understand the available tools and their legal implications. At GCash, we constantly leverage technology to effectively investigate and attribute cybercrimes, providing a more secure and safer digital experience for millions of Filipinos,” says GCash head of legal pursuance Atty. Dino Regalario.
Recognizing the growing prevalence of financial cybercrime in the Philippines, GCash is committed to working closely with government agencies to protect the public and safeguard digital transactions, ultimately seeking to support the capabilities of law enforcement in investigating, prosecuting, and preventing cybercrimes to ensure a better, safer digital-ready nation.

Hand-in-hand for environmental conservation. Present in the Memorandum of Agreement signing were (from left to right)Sto. Tomas City, Batangas Mayor Atty. Arth Jhun Marasigan, PCPPI Chief Environmental, Social and Governance Officer Atty. Carina Bayon, and City Environment and Natural Resources Office Head Engineer Eric Velasco.
Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of PepsiCo beverages in the country—recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) and the local government of Sto. Tomas, Batangas for the Adopt-A-River Program as part of the company’s long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.
Under this partnership, PCPPI’s Southern Tagalog Region Operations (STRO) team will reinforce community engagement and sanitation efforts to keep the Dipangla Creek clean and free of obstructions. The said creek is a 300-meter stretch located at Brgy. San Miguel, beside the STRO plant in Sto. Tomas.
“The partnership to protect the Dipangla Creek through the Adopt-A-River Program is an essential part of our commitment to promote responsible water stewardship across our operations. This is aligned with our goal to create a positive impact on society with programs focused on responsible and ethical operations, employee and community empowerment, and environmental sustainability,” said PCPPI Chief Environmental, Social and Governance Officer Atty. Carina Bayon.
PCPPI will ensure the weekly deployment of team members to conduct the collection of solid wastes, maintenance, and upkeep of the project area. It will also monitor the execution of weekly cleaning, overgrown vegetation cutting, and collection of accumulated residual and non-residual garbage along the river stream. Furthermore, PCPPI will put up vertical gardens along the Dipangla Creek stream in support of the enhanced National Greening Program.
Aside from the Adopt-A-River Program, PCPPI STRO has been actively supporting other environmental initiatives led by LLDA and the Sto. Tomas LGU through the years. In September 2021, STRO provided assistance to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) during the cleanup activity held along San Juan River traversing Brgy. San Vicente.
In July 2022, STRO celebrated PCPPI’s anniversary by participating in the National Arbor Day Tree Planting Activity of the Sto. Tomas CENRO. The plant also received a Certificate of Appreciation for its donation of 200 narra tree seedlines. In addition, STRO supported CENRO’s “Operasyon Linis Ilog” activity, in celebration of the Philippine Environment Month in June 2023.
“PCPPI will continue to strengthen our partnerships with the local government and other key community stakeholders to further our environmental sustainability commitments and contribute to the development of the towns and cities where we operate,” Atty. Bayon added.
