LOOK: Check out how athletes get creative and train anywhere
MANILA, Philippines – April 8, 2020 – What happens when top athletes are stuck at
home? Do they stop putting in the work and watch their workout goals slide?
As some of Manila’s fitness personalities have showed us, not even staying at home will hinder them from working up a sweat to keep their health and wellness in check. They simply get creative, using whatever they can find at home to create effective routines, as if they’ve spent a session in their usual gym.
Check out some of these home routines that some athletes have shared:
(Important: please listen to your body and gauge whether you are able to perform these routines. Observe proper form, hydrate always, and if possible, consult your physician prior to performing these exercises)
Mike Jiang (@mikejiang8, OCR Athlete, UA Run Crew Head Coach) demonstrates Burpees Explosion
Mike Jiang combines the exciting burpee with lunges, squats, and jumps to form an explosive full-body workout. His dynamic routine not only works most major muscle groups, but it also improves cardiovascular health. Since Mike’s routine involves a lot of dynamic movements, make sure to wear clothing that doesn’t restrict mobility, wear snug training shoes, and perform the exercises on a stable, non-slippery surface.
Lexi Noval (@flexinoval, OCR Athlete, UA Run Crew Head Coach, Fitness Instructor) amps up the resistance
Lexi Noval puts a twist on classic cardio moves with a trusty resistance band. Similar to weights, these nifty tools provide external resistance that your muscles have to fight against, leveling up otherwise simple moves. You’ll feel the difference as you follow Lexi’s lunges, push-ups, squats, and burpees, all amped up with the resistance band. As with Mike’s routine, this also involves dynamic movements, so wear comfortable workout gear and make sure your exercise space is safe.
Gabb Rosario (@gabbrosario, OCR Athlete, Strength & Conditioning Coach) gets crafty with kettlebell substitutes
Kettlebells are good tools to use for a variety of workouts, but if you don’t have one, use a similar weight and item in its stead—just like how Gabb Rosario does the “kettlebell” swing with a water container! Gabb’s simple routine also involves using a stable bench to perform box jumps and rows. Capping the 4-step routine is the engaging plyo push-up.
Meggie Ochoa (@meggie_ochoa, PH National Athlete for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) powers up the core
Meggie Ochoa shows how you can strengthen your core with simple movements that go a long way. With just a yoga mat and a good workout space, target the core with toe touches, two-inch leg raises, Russian twists, and planks with heel raises. Try to push for three sets, doing as many reps as possible per exercise within forty-five seconds.
