The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has reaffirmed its commitment to support the recovery of local hotel operators as they bounce back from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a webinar recently organized by Meralco, the power distributor, which has long been a partner of the Philippine Hotel Owners Association (PHOA), pledged to continue providing stable and reliable electricity service, and energy solutions befitting to the needs of the industry moving forward.
The pandemic, at its peak in 2020, led to the temporary closure of businesses and loss of income for the hospitality industry. Despite the challenges, the industry supported the government in its fight against the pandemic.
“For the past two years, our customers from the Hotel Industry were among the hardest hit by the sudden decline in occupancy. Their facilities were used for quarantine, requiring them to operate as quasi-hospitals and to strictly implement health and safety protocols while providing the utmost care to travelers that had to be accommodated. During this time, Meralco initiated contract right-sizing to assist our customers with hopes of preventing further loss of business and employment,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Enterprise and National Government Engr. Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo.
According to PHOA Executive Director Benito C. Bengzon Jr., Meralco played a vital role in helping PHOA members deliver on their commitments with energy-saving measures, such as contract rightsizing and temporary waiving of the Guaranteed Minimum Billing Demand (GMBD).
“PHOA sees Meralco as an institutional and vital industry partner. We hope to strengthen our relationship so that together we can continuously improve the delivery of services to our clientele,” Bengzon said.
Raffles and Fairmont Hotel Group, a member of the PHOA, similarly recognized the crucial role that Meralco plays in the recovery of the industry.
“Meralco is an essential partner in our business by providing for the electricity of the hotels. Customer satisfaction is one of our goals and we could have not attained it if power supply is unreliable,” said Raffles and Fairmont Hotel General Manager Aubrey Ada.
As local tourism takes off this year, Engr. Domingo said: “Meralco is more than happy to assist the hotels to ensure energy-readiness once again. Further, their aptitude for economic recovery through participation in the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) is laudable.”
ILP is a demand-side management program of the Department of Energy where large businesses are asked to temporarily de-load from the grid when the Luzon grid is placed under red alert.
Participation of companies is crucial to the success of ILP, since this may spare an estimated 4,000 households and small businesses from power outages for every 1-megawatt of de-loaded power.
Among the companies in the hospitality industry within Meralco’s franchise that are enrolled under the ILP are Taal Vista, City of Dreams, Discovery Suites, Diamond Hotel, Sofitel Manila, and Raffles and Fairmont Hotel.#
We often think of the holidays as a time of light, love and laughter. But for some people, the holidays are also associated with stress and anxiety. Some children are especially susceptible to the increased noise and the fast pace associated with holiday preparations. If your child doesn’t seem like his or her normal self this holiday season, here are six signs it may be due to anxiety.
1. Sleep Troubles
Children who are experiencing anxiety often have a difficult time falling asleep. They may also experience restless sleep or have frequent nightmares. These are all common indications a child is dealing with too much stress and anxiety. Child anxiety medication over the counter may help kids relax so they can get higher-quality sleep.
2. Frequent Temper Tantrums
Children don’t often know how to deal with how anxiety makes them feel. As a result, they’re more likely to act out and throw frequent temper tantrums. If your child is suddenly having more meltdowns and doesn’t seem to be able to handle emotions in a healthy way, anxiety may be to blame.
3. Poor Focus
Poor focus is one of the hallmarks of anxiety. Your child’s thoughts may be so preoccupied with persistent worries that he or she can’t focus on other things. Parents sometimes think their anxious children are intentionally ignoring them, but this usually isn’t the case. They may find it very difficult to concentrate on what’s being said to them at any given time.
4. Frequent Stomachaches and Headaches
Anxiety often manifests itself in physical ways. If your child gets frequent stomachaches or headaches that aren’t linked to illness, it may be an indication of anxiety. Brillia for anxiety may help minimize these types of symptoms.
5. Restlessness
While some kids become withdrawn when they’re experiencing anxiety, others may become more restless and hyperactive. The pent-up energy caused by anxious feelings has to go somewhere, and it often comes out in unproductive ways.
6. Changes in Appetite
If you see noticeable and sudden changes in your child’s appetite, pay attention. Children with anxiety may not want to eat as much as usual, or they may experience a more voracious appetite. Major changes in eating patterns can signal that a child is feeling excessive stress.
What To Do if Your Child Has Anxiety During the Holidays
If you can tell that your child is experiencing anxiety during the holidays, there are things you can do to help. Here are some suggestions.
Have a “safe space” or dedicated room where your little one can go when feeling social anxiety.
Encourage your child to communicate his or her feelings. Putting feelings into words can help your child understand and cope with those feelings more effectively.
Give your child headphones to help block out excessive noise from holiday dinners, parties and get-togethers.
Encourage your child to take slow, deep breaths when dealing with anxious feelings.
You may also want to take your child to a professional for cognitive-behavioral therapy if other methods don’t work. Children often experience heightened anxiety during the holidays. When you know how to help your children reduce anxious feelings, you can help them have a more enjoyable holiday season.
Don Timothy Buhain, Rex Education chief executive officer; Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada, author; Atty. Dominador Buhain, Rex Education chairman and president; and Danda Crimelda Buhain, Rex Education chief external affairs officer at the book signing of “Code of Ethics of Professional Teachers 2023 Edition”
After two virtual events during the pandemic, the 2022 Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) National Convention is back on ground with Rex Education and a strong delegation of educators, school heads, and superintendents from all over the country. Situated within the post-pandemic context, the 2022 CEAP National Convention hopes to bring together the learnings and experiences of schools who are recovering slowly from the challenges of the past 2 years, and help them and all educators and learners collaborate more to move education forward progressively and spiritually.
The Rex Education Hub showcased REX’s diverse suite of solutions from early childhood education to professional development.
The theme, “Pilgrims of Hope Moving Forward in Synodality,” is inspired from the Holy Year 2025 motto, “Pilgrims of Hope,” which represents the theme of Pope Francis’ pontificate. It also calls upon the journeying together of various members of the education sector as one Church, as prescribed by Pope Francis in his Global Compact on Education message in October 2020.
“To educate is always an act of hope, one that calls for cooperation in turning a barren and paralyzing indifference into another way of thinking that recognizes our interdependence,” said Pope Francis during the speech. “The journey of life calls for hope grounded in solidarity. All change requires a process of education in order to create new paradigms capable of responding to the challenges and problems of the contemporary world, of understanding and finding solutions to the needs of every generation, and in this way contributing to the flourishing of humanity now and in the future.” Rex Education Hub: A Lifelong Learning Journey
Building on the theme of the 2022 CEAP National Convention, the Rex Education Hub was created for delegates to have a glimpse of every Filipino learner’s lifelong learning journey through rediscovering REX’s diverse suite of solutions from early childhood education to professional development.
The hub was also designed for delegates to feel renewed excitement about learning in all life stages and to collaborate more and innovate further in support of quality education.” “The journey of life is a journey of learning. At REX, we support Pope Francis and CEAP’s vision for synodality, where every Filipino is moving as one for every learner, so that they are empowered, equipped, and championed.” said Don Timothy Buhain, chief executive officer of Rex Education. “Through the Rex Education Hub at CEAP 2022, we hope we have showcased, yet again, that we are here to support every learner in every phase of their journey.”
Under Early Childhood Education (ECE), REX showcased its educational book titles, anchored on socio-emotional, language, and cognitive skills reflected in the six domains of development in the National Early Learning Framework (NELF) by the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council. In response to the need for learners to know more about Philippine history, “My Bayani” is REX’s series of storybooks that introduces Filipino heroes to inspire self-analysis and reflection.
Basic Education continues to be the foundation of many learners’ development journey. From kindergarten to senior high school, REX worktexts are applicable across disciplines and integrate values and character formation for holistic development. Other learning solutions such as “My Skill Builder,” “My Career Journey,” and “Laro, Likha, Linang” are supplementary and equally comprehensive materials that further support the Filipino learners throughout their learning journey.
Moreover, after the pandemic reinforced digital solutions as non-negotiable in education, REX continued to build on the importance of digital resources. REX offers Schoology, a learning management system, and standardized assessments such as Digital Aces and Harrison Assessments as great tools that help mold learners who are ready for the demands of the 21st century.
REX also further guides students as they step into higher education. Relevant and evidence-based solutions and up-to-date contents based on real-life applications are at the core of REX’s learning materials to prepare students as they choose and build their careers. As a lifelong learning partner to law students and practitioners, REX not only creates books, but also opportunities for mentoring and talks or conversations. A book signing with Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada, author of Code of Ethics of Professional Teachers, was held on-site on October 27, 2022.
As learning continues beyond formal education, REX’s suite of professional learning materials are intended for those who are looking to level up their journey and contribute to nation-building. Aside from various legal materials, REX’s solutions include the Barangay Handbook, designed for public servants to help them advance their knowledge and skills as they carry out their tasks for the benefit of their constituents.
REX also highlighted their partnership across several promotional and educational campaigns with Edukasyon.ph, an organization dedicated to developing EdTech products and services that bridge the gap between teaching and learning in the digital world. CEAP 2022: A Renewal of Commitment to Edukampyons
REX’s annual participation in the 2022 CEAP National Convention is a renewal of the company’s commitment to championing education and being every learner’s lifelong learning partner.
“As Edukampyons, we always protect, respect, and fulfill the needs of every Filipino learner. We can only do this when we work together with our educators, school heads and administrators, and stakeholders—fellow Edukampyons, who can help us move forward for a progressive education for our nation,” said Buhain.
Held on October 25–28, 2022 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, CEAP 2022 brought together virtual attendees and on-ground delegates to attend concurrent sessions, Eucharistic celebrations, oath-taking of the newly elected officers of the CEAP National Board, and the conferment of the Pro Deo et Patria Awards.

Filipino alternative soul/rock outfit of Mercury has finally dropped their debut studio album, CHANGIN’ via Sony Music Entertainment.
According to the band, the 12-track release serves as an exploration of the different experiences that “we face as humans.” Submitting to the pull of their heart without hesitation, CHANGIN’ dredges up old memories with refined maturity and no-filler honesty.
“One of the things that we did a bit differently is being able to write together,” the Fools trio shares in a statement. “The many songs that we wrote are some things that we have gone through as a band and individually: heartbreak, love, laziness, productivity, stress, doubt, confidence, fear, and realizations. These are just some of the emotions we go through in our lives.”
CHANGIN’ was co-produced by of Mercury with former bandmate knōwmaad, whose subtle experimentation added edginess to the music’s youthful exuberance. The result is a timeless sound that hardly feels dated at all, an artistically fulfilled effort that merges their past music influences with newly-found technical chops.
“Working with knōwmaad, there was a lot of things that we had in mind but couldn’t execute, and he was able to do it,” reveals of Mercury’s lead vocalist and guitarist Nathan Huang. “It was interesting to have him in our project because it felt like he came back to the group (since he was our former bassist). With our ideas and his ideas combined, we were able to pull off something beautiful and authentic.”
Initially released as a three-part volume, CHANGIN’ culminates with old and new songs that are all flesh and blood, as if extracted from a place of familiarity.
Its focus track “I KEEP FALLING” is a straight-up love song that doesn’t deny its sense of earnestness. Written during the pandemic, the song articulates the idea of inseparable love that lasts. “It’s about falling for the person over and over again no matter what,” Huang discloses with fervent adoration.
of Mercury is slated to debut the entirety their debut full-length album, CHANGIN’ live on Friday, November 11 at The Nook Molito in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Also billed as a celebration of their 6th year as a band, of Mercury’s CHANGIN’ Album Launch will feature a long set from the headliner themselves, and guest performances by their peers in the music industry, including Any Name’s Okay, Lola Amour, ONE CLICK STRAIGHT, and Over October.
CHANGIN’ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
Their version of a Christmas classic is part of Pentatonix’s new album, Holidays Around The World
American pop group Pentatonix lights up the holiday season with the release of their sixth album, Holidays Around The World—out via RCA Records.
The a cappella ensemble brings their global vision back to life as they collaborate with some of the biggest pop stars and idols from different parts of the world, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, Congolese gospel singer Grace Lokwa, Lebanese singer Hiba Tawaji, Latin band La Santa Cecilia, Indian superstar Shreya Ghoshal, Japanese YouTubers HIKAKIN & SEIKIN, British a cappella ensemble The King’s Singers, and American superstar Meghan Trainor.

The three-time Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Philippines title holder, Blacklist International, knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a champion. The MLBB team, consisting of Ohmyv33nus, Wise, Edward, Hadji, Oheb, Kevier, Bon Chan, Master The Basics, DexStar, and Eson, applies a consistent winning formula that keeps them #DesignedToBePowerful.
With mobile gaming and esports growing in popularity in the Philippines, members Ohmyv33nus, Wise, and Edward share their insights as to how the mix of individual skill with the right tools and partners can successfully foster the next generation of victors.
Practice and mental strengthening as keys to victory
Becoming a champion doesn’t just happen overnight and, in fact, requires lengthy and demanding preparation, even for experienced players like Blacklist International. As the category becomes more competitive, members must up their game even more. “As much as possible, we practice every day from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.,” shares Wise.
To cope, the players also note the importance of mental preparation in order to focus on training and improving for tournaments. “Mental preparation is so important because any little thing can affect the outcome of a match,” adds Wise. “Another factor is confidence in yourself.”
Mental fortitude also comes in handy when dealing with the pressure of being on a global stage. The Blacklist members credit the intense training and setup their managers create as a way to get them used to the environment of a competitive match.
“In our recent preparations, our team prepared simulation training, which recreated the scenario and ambiance of a grand finals match,” recalls Ohmyv33nus. “We had our headsets on with white noise, and there was an audience watching too, so that we could get used to the feeling and wouldn’t falter when the moment arrived.”
An eager look towards the future of esports
The future of esports in the Philippines looks bright, and Blacklist expects it to only grow even more. Whereas gaming was previously seen only as a hobby, it is now respected as a profession. “I still remember the time when people would laugh when I would say that my dream was to be a gamer,” says Wise. “But now, when people say they aspire to be in esports, that’s not the case anymore.”
Ohmyv33nus adds that support and recognition from established companies, international organizations, universities, and even the government can only mean good things for the industry. “Personally, it’s exciting because this is my passion and this is what I want to do. So I’m really happy to see that it’s growing and that more and more people and organizations are supporting the industry, from big companies to the government and even universities that give scholarships for esports.”
The team also credits the role smartphones and technology play in advancing esports and the growing interest among the general public. Now that many Filipinos have a mini computer in their hands at all times, mobile gaming has become a hobby and even a career. “Everyone in the younger generation, even kids, now have smartphones, so esports is so much more accessible,” Edward says.
“When I was growing up, everyone was into computer games, not really phone games,” adds Ohmyv33nus. “But not everyone has a PC. Since smartphones are more accessible, it’s easier to get into esports and the opportunities to make it are a lot bigger.”
Thankfully, smartphones like the OPPO A96 have features to support mobile gaming to the fullest. As Ohmyv33nus seeks for RAM and powerful battery life, the A96’s 8GB+256GB and its unique RAM Expansion feature provides a smooth experience while playing Mobile Legends. Its 33W SuperVOOC technology and 5000mAh battery also keeps their streak going. “Getting a low-battery notification while gaming is annoying. It’s also hard to play while your phone is charging, because it might overheat and you won’t be able to maximize the game,” Ohmyv33nus says.
Wise, on the other hand, singles out the dual speakers of the OPPO A96. “You can clearly hear the other team’s skills while playing, so it’s a big help.” The A96’s All-Day Eye Care also helps them stay comfortable during the long hours of practice.
Balance life in and out of the game
While they eagerly await the next batch of esports players, Blacklist members also have essential advice for those who are looking to make it their career. “There are a lot of kids who become addicted to games, and it’s not just the case for Mobile Legends,” says Ohmyv33nus. “I see it even among my younger cousins.”
For Blacklist, one’s health and education are essential, and must not be put aside in favor of gaming. “Studies need to be a priority because, in esports, not everyone has a success story. Especially now, there are a lot of people trying to pursue a career, so it becomes much more competitive,” shares Wise. “Completing your education gives you a fallback if anything should not pan out.”
“Don’t forget to take care of yourself and to finish your studies,” adds Edward. “I admit that before, I would neglect some of my assignments in favor of gaming, and that shouldn’t be the case.”
The members also remind young players to never pass up the chance to unwind by spending time with family or simply relaxing and capturing these moments with the A96. “When we’re not gaming, we still use our phones to take photos. Wise has a vlog, and sometimes we also do live streams using our phones, so the camera is an important feature,” says Ohmyv33nus. Wise adds that they also use the A96’s 50 MP and AI-powered camera features to shoot Tiktok content.
