Previously a students’ congress, it has evolved into a podcast for academe and young professionals for this year. The partnership includes the development of evergreen and topic-based content for students and young practitioners to have access to continuous and experience-based learnings via easy access to a platform favored by its target audience. The simple things in life are oftentimes taken for granted. To some people, tangible objects like clothes, bags, or shoes are normal commodities that they can easily buy and eventually dispose of at will. Meanwhile, millions of people around the world, specifically children, walk barefoot as they lack financial resources to avail themselves of decent footwear.
According to a 2017 article by William Blischke, an American Sociology professor at the California State University Dominguez Hills, 14% of the earth’s inhabitants lack shoes or have inadequate footwear. He adds that in some developing countries, shoeless children cannot attend school because they may communicate and contract diseases from their foot sores. This is why some international non-profit organizations claim that shoes, or the lack thereof, are one of the most visible signs of poverty.
In the Philippines, there is no available academic study that justifies Filipino children’s actual lack of shoes. However, this phenomenon can be substantiated by the 2023 report of the Department of Education, which states that one of the most pressing issues in the basic education system is the lack of access to resources. Since school shoes are an integral part of a student’s uniform even in public schools, it will be difficult for less-privileged families to purchase them. Thus, leaving children with no choice but to either use their old and ill-fitting shoes, or worse, walk barefoot – just to complete their education.
This is the challenge that the SM Store intends to address through the Share Shoes campaign – to provide school shoes to the poverty-stricken students of the Philippines. To safeguard Filipinos from falling into the hands of these fraudsters, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) and the Philippines’ leading mobile wallet GCash share a few guidelines on how to know if an online investment offer is a scam.
“As a financially inclusive investment platform, GCash continues to give Filipinos access to online investment opportunities, but at the same time, we are also working hard to educate and give our users knowledge on how to avoid scams,” said AJ Sibal, GCash Fraud Management Head.
The most basic description of such a scam is a high return on investment in just a short span of time.
“Beware of these types of promises as they are too good to be true. For example, they will promise 50% profit in just two weeks. Worse, they seem to be in a hurry for you to send the seed investment money immediately,” warned PNP-ACG spokesperson P/Capt. Michelle Sabino.
Another red flag is when the offer is very secretive of their company information. As one of the key players in the investment landscape via in-app features such as GFunds and GStocks PH, GCash strongly advises investors to check the List of Public Companies by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) first to make sure investment offers are legitimate.

SM City Grand Central welcomed eager job seekers and enthusiastic employers to the special job fair held recently at the 5th level of the mall. The event provided a valuable opportunity for job seekers to secure employment ahead of the Christmas rush while enabling companies to strengthen their workforce to meet the heightened demand during the festive season.
The job fair attracted a wide range of potential employees from various backgrounds and skill levels, offering more than 3,733 job positions. Given the upcoming increase in customer demand during the holiday season, 41 organizations from various industries participated in the job fair.
From retail giants to companies in hospitality, logistics, and service providers, the fair showcased a broad mix of job offerings, with positions ranging from sales associates, customer service representatives, warehouse staff, administrative professionals, to management roles.
Preliminary results showed that at least 237 job seekers were hired on the spot, while 725 qualified applicants will be processed for hiring.
