The Filipina recording star channels her idyllic youthful phase in the new single “SUMFLING,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment.
With suave vocals coasting through laid-back R&B beats and reggae-infused production, “SUMFLING” showcases another side of Bruce: warm and chill on the inside, but effortlessly catching our attention with her distinct brand of charm.
According to Bruce, “SUMFLING” allowed her to experiment with a variety of genres and confront her fears of going against the current.
“It was my decision to embrace that shift in sound and vibe,” Alex Bruce shares. “I’ve always wanted to explore new musical landscapes for every project that I work on, and I’m glad that in SUMFLING, I get to bring a fresh, laid-back energy to my music. It sounds chill but danceable at the same time. It was a refreshing change that challenged me as an artist.”
“SUMFLING is an expression that I made up by combining the words summer and fling,” recalls the 17-year-old hip-hop sensation. “I was in Australia when I wrote this track. Life was very peaceful there, and somehow it inspired me to go on a writing spree.”
The tropical track revisits a memorable romantic encounter with someone during a holiday break.
Its release comes with a music video directed by David Olson. The MV follows Alex Bruce and her friends on a trip to La Union while enjoying nature hangouts, surfing sessions, and summertime conversations.
The visual narrative also shows Bruce meeting a random person on a bonfire, with the two romantically hitting it off for a few days straight and getting confused with their feelings for each other.
Bruce reveals, “We wanted the music video to reflect the overall vibe of the song. Summer is supposed to be about being outdoors, having fun, and feeling great about yourself, and this song perfectly captures that. I’m also happy that I’ve worked with my friends syd, Aira, Violet, and Thomas for the MV shoot. This will always have a special place in my heart.”
Alex Bruce’s “SUMFLING” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. The music video will be out on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 6 p.m. Watch it here.
The first APVE in PH runs from June 5 to 7 at the World Trade Expo Manila.
Pasay City, Philippines—Following the record-high sales of vehicles in the Philippines in 2023, the sectors for automotive parts and car care products are logically set to rev up further. Thus, the first Auto Parts & Vehicles Expo Philippines (APVE) is coming as a timely platform for local and international suppliers to convene for trading, networking, and exchange of ideas and innovations about automotive parts, accessories, maintenance equipment, and tools.
The inaugural edition of the three-day sectoral event from June 5 to 7, 2024 is gathering up to 4,000 prospective buyers and sellers from across the country and Southeast Asia. APVE also covers suppliers and spare parts for the growing electric vehicle (EV) sector in the country. Through Republic Act 11697 or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), sales of electric vehicles continue to pick up along with the faster EV adoption, encouraging public sector support, and democratizing costs. As global sustainability gains momentum, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is pioneering an innovative approach to banking. In celebration of its 3rd Sustainability Awareness Month (SAM), BPI introduces its inaugural Phygital Flagship branch at BPI Dela Rosa, marking a significant stride in the banking industry’s journey towards a more sustainable future. The theme ‘Beyond Green’ underscores BPI’s commitment to a holistic sustainability approach, integrating environmental stewardship with social responsibility, economic stability, and good governance.

The concept of Phygital branch transformation epitomizes BPI’s dedication to revolutionizing the customer experience. BPI’s Phygital branches offer unparalleled convenience, efficiency, and personalized advisory services to meet the diverse needs of its clientele, whether traditional or digitally savvy.
“Our Phygital branches enhance the in-branch customer experience by blending the efficiency, ease, and convenience of our digital platforms with personalized, caring, and expert advisory services. With 26 Phygital branches already transformed, BPI demonstrates its commitment to enhancing accessibility and efficiency across its network. Moreover, 14 of these branches have been certified by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as EDGE-certified Green Bank Branches. The EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification recognizes buildings that achieve at least 20% savings in energy, water, and embodied energy-efficient materials, showcasing BPI’s dedication to reducing its ecological footprint.
Beyond its Phygital transformation, BPI offers a suite of Green Solutions, providing sustainable financing options to promote eco-conscious choices among its customers. From Solar Mortgages to Eco-Build Financing and Electric Vehicle (EV) Financing, BPI empowers individuals to embrace environmentally friendly practices in their everyday lives more conveniently.

While sustainability has been strongly attached to environmental protection, BPI has come a long way in addressing social issues such as those tied to poverty, hunger, and health. Underlining its commitment to social responsibility, BPI has introduced LavLoans, also known as Lavander Loans, a specialized financing service tailored to support cancer patients and their families. By offering favorable financing terms, LavLoans aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with cancer treatment, enabling patients to focus on their recovery journey with greater ease and peace of mind.

Coffee enthusiasts who are looking for a quick stopover to enjoy a good brew will delight in the newest store concept unveiled by UCC Ueshima Coffee Philippines by the Mugen Group, the company behind the UCC cafes and restaurants in the Philippines. On June 5, it held the grand opening of its first XPRESSO by UCC at Petron Bel-Air in Makati.
“At XPRESSO, we understand that you’re always on the go, and we are here to fuel your journey with a shot of happiness. XPRESSO by UCC is more than just a coffee kiosk; it is a testament to our commitment to providing you with the best quality coffee, quickly and conveniently,” said Mugen Group President and CEO Hubert U. Young in his speech during the event.
The grand opening was attended by members of the media and special guests, who were treated to a thrilling performance from Taiko Drummers, a raffle, games, and the Wish Bus.
The Go-To Store for To-Go Quality Coffee
“We are proud to offer our products at affordable prices without compromising on quality. Our coffee and food items are meticulously crafted to ensure they meet the high standards that UCC is known for. From P60 to P180 for beverages and P70 to P120 for food items, XPRESSO makes premium coffee accessible to everyone,” Young said.
XPRESSO by UCC’s menu includes to-go coffee and non-coffee varieties that are perfect with their pastries and sandwiches. The menu items are designed to be ready-to-carry for customers on their way to school, work, or home.
The store’s design and branding are heavily influenced by Japanese pop culture and aesthetics as can be seen in its logo, which consists of a red circle (similar to the Nisshōki or Japanese flag) and the XPRESSO name, all contained within a stacked box.
XPRESSO by UCC caters to coffee lovers from different age groups — GenX, Millennials, and GenZ who are looking for quality coffee on-the-go. Its official tagline, “A Sip of the Rising Sun”, embodies its Japanese roots and inspiration. The company that eventually became UCC was founded in Kobe in 1933 by the Father of Coffee in Japan, Tadao Ueshima.
The tagline also mirrors the heartwarming and energetic personality of XPRESSO by UCC in helping Filipinos level up their day and encourage them to be their best.
Serving the Second Biggest Coffee Consumers in Asia
According to the World Coffee Portal Research, the Philippines is the second largest individual coffee-consuming market in Asia with 80% of Filipinos drinking an average of 2.5 cups a day. Japan comes in first place.
These numbers reflect that coffee is not just a pastime for Filipinos, but an integral part of their lifestyle.
With this in mind, XPRESSO by UCC seeks to serve Filipino coffee drinkers who are looking for new coffee offerings that don’t compromise on quality.
“As we move forward, we remain dedicated to our mission: to provide convenient coffee venues that serve the finest flavors of Japanese coffee at an affordable price. Each cup of XPRESSO coffee is a promise of quality and a moment of joy,” Young said.
In observance of World Hunger Day, online food and grocery delivery platform foodpanda is stepping up its efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition through its sustainability program, “Let’s Do our Pau-rt” (LDOP).
Every year, on May 28th, World Hunger Day serves as a reminder of the global crisis of hunger and malnutrition. With over 1 billion women and children suffering from malnutrition and nearly 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to eat, the urgency to address this issue has never been greater.
In the Philippines, while there has been progress in addressing involuntary hunger, with a decrease from 14 percent to 11 percent between December 2023 and March 2024, the OCTA Research group survey reveals that an estimated 2.9 million families still grapple with food insecurity.
“The effects of hunger and malnutrition are far-reaching, because it impacts entire generations worldwide. But by starting locally, we can make global ripples against this crisis,” said foodpanda Philippines CEO Daniel Marogy.
Leading up to World Hunger Day, foodpanda has launched several initiatives aimed at making a tangible difference in alleviating hunger, malnutrition and food waste.
Share Meals, Share Like a Panda
To allow app users to easily donate meals after checking out their orders, foodpanda is leveraging its partnership with United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) through their innovative fundraising mobile application ShareTheMeal (STM). The donation feature aims to make donating to local beneficiaries as seamless and convenient as possible.
During its first run, the campaign successfully donated meals to local farmers from disaster-prone areas in the country who are often affected by climate emergencies.
“Given how successful the first initial run was, we wanted to continue our engagement with WFP so that more local beneficiaries will receive donated meals from our app users through our platform,” said Marogy.
Marogy also mentioned that they have mobilized their employees, urging them to share their meal donations via STM on their personal social media accounts. “Through creative posts and content, our employees can do their part by raising awareness about the importance of combating hunger and motivate others to join the effort.”
Food Rescue Missions
Stop Food Waste Day, observed last April 24, saw foodpanda collaborate with its long-time partner Scholars of Sustenance (SOS PH) to rescue near-expiration items from its grocery arm, pandamart, and redistribute them to communities in need.
SOS PH representatives rescue near-expiry items from foodpanda’s pandamart to donate to their community partners.
“Our aim is to redirect these near-expiry items to those who can still benefit from them, rather than letting them go to waste. This is a significant step against food wastage given that globally, about a third of food produced is lost or spoiled, with Filipino households alone wasting nearly 3 million tons annually.”
The donations from pandamart were able to procure more than 3,000 meals donated to SOS PH’s partner communities.
Taking action on World Hunger Day
On the exact day of World Hunger Day, foodpanda employees joined forces with SOS PH to cook rescued food items in their soup kitchen in Marikina, providing meals to 300 beneficiaries.
Employees of foodpanda Philippines volunteered to prepare rescued food items collected by SOS PH for donation to a community in Marikina.
“Our Panda employees were excited to participate in this mission for the second time. They previously cooked rescued food items during last October’s World Food Day, and I look forward to seeing more of their involvement in soup kitchen missions like this one.”
Marogy assured that these efforts will continue even without celebrations or annual events. “As we mark World Hunger Day this year, let’s reflect on the importance of ending hunger and malnutrition for good. For us, what we want is to create a better, healthier future for everyone, one meal at a time.”
The violinist-singer/songwriter expresses cultural adjustments in sophisticated jazz-pop number
London-based, Filipino indie-pop artist Muri releases “Afternoon,” the first official single off her upcoming debut EP.
The track chronicles the adjustments of living in a new, unfamiliar place away from home, something that the Filipino singer-songwriter has dealt with in recent years after deciding to pack her bags and pursue a music career in Europe.
“I was constantly comparing here and home, which created this sometimes dark cloud of bitterness, desolation, and frustration, without really realizing that that was an unhealthy thing to do,” tells Muri, the violinist-singer of Philippine-based indie-folk collective The Ransom Collective. “And it really takes a lot out of you, until you realize you can redefine your own reality for yourself. Afternoon is kind of that journey. Both the dark, and the good that you find when you lean into it differently. Whether that’s realizing there’s something, someone, you’re missing, whatever it is that may have given comfort and is now gone. And then finally learning to see what or who is in front of you that shifts your whole perspective.”
Muri penned “Afternoon” and collaborated with rising French producer Sacha Arnaud, whom she met and connected with in Paris over a cup of coffee. The promising newcomer admits that she reached out to Arnaud after seeing a video of his performance online.
“It was an interesting process because it was our first time working together,” says Muri. “And the process kind of also reflects my nomadic life. We’d exchanged files remotely between France and Italy and had mixed-in-person sessions in Paris and in the countryside outside of Lyon. We must have worked on this song in at least four different locations.”
Complementing her confessional songwriting style with a vignette of soothing soundscapes and luscious melodies, “Afternoon” showcases a more vulnerable side of Muri. The soul-infused, jazzy pop tune documents her bouts with uncertainty as she figures out her own place in a world that gets bigger and bigger by the day.
The Awit Award-nominee reveals, “It feels like also opening my world to listeners: Who I am from the Philippines, and who I’ve grown to be here in Europe. Who we are or can be, when we shed skin, or discover new perspectives. What the music captures at this moment of time, and who I’m collaborating with. Hints of my old identity, and taking on new ones as an artist. This song was written more from the heart than the mind with raw feelings and thoughts.”
Muri’s “Afternoon” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.
