MANILA, Philippines. SM Store, with the continuous support of its loyal shoppers, aims to foster the value of giving back to the community through an act of kindness, that is donating notebooks.
Last January 2023, the Philippines’ Department of Education released the Basic Education Report indicating that one of the most pressing issues in the basic education system is the lack of access to resources – a challenge that was further heightened during the time of the global pandemic.
Among many school materials, notebooks still remain as one the most vital tools in learning. According to a study by the Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College, the notebook system provides an organizational structure for students. This is particularly important for students who may lack the ability to know how to best organize their information and thoughts.
With this, SM Store launched an initiative to help underprivileged students who have little to no capacity to procure basic school materials – such as notebooks. Shop & Share to Bridge Access to Education is a donation drive wherein customers can sponsor a kid’s school kit with any valid transaction including any item from the SM Stationery section.
For only P99, a school kit containing seven (7) notebooks will be donated to the students of a ten (10) public elementary school across the country. In order to guarantee that the donated school kits will be utilized by students who need it most, SM Store is collaborating with SM Foundation for the proper identification of the school beneficiaries. With sixty-nine (69) participating SM Stores nationwide, this initiative presents an extensive outlet for shoppers to donate and for SM to ensure that its coverage can benefit rural areas and underserved communities.
In a statement, Mr. Dhinno S. Tiu, Executive Vice President of SM Store, expressed the purpose behind this initiative:
“SM Store has been the top-of-mind go-to place for parents and students every back-to-school season. Thus, we also want to be an ideal channel to bridge access to education to those who need it most by working together with our customers. Shop&Share for Education aims to bring school kits to almost fourteen thousand (14,000) grade school pupils in partnership with SM Foundation.”
This initiative reinforces SM Store’s commitment to advocate for community development while involving its customers. By donating notebooks, customers will have a special platform to give a student an opportunity to have a better learning experience. A gesture of generosity, however small, will surely leave a lasting impact in the lives of these children and their families.
Shop at your favorite SM Store from August 1 to 31, 2023 and support a student in need. With just P99, you can help young Filipino learners realize their dreams. Together with (the) SM Store, the fire of knowledge will remain burning – allowing the children to have a brighter future. (Per DTI Fair Trade Permit No. FTEB-172683, Series of 2023)

Doc Nielsen Donato feeds Top Breed to dogs in Albay, Bicol.
When there are animals in distress, veterinarian Dr. Nielsen Donato and his team are always on call to provide medical treatment and food. A mission that’s close to his heart is to feed and check on dogs in disaster-prone areas in the Philippines.
“We always try to respond to disaster sites that are hit by a typhoon, earthquake or volcanic eruption. If we can manage, we’ll really go out of our way,” Doc Nielsen said.
Doc Nielsen has genuine love and compassion for animals. As the managing partner and chief surgeon of Vets in Practice (VIP), he tends to different kinds of pets every day. He also runs the Laguna Wildlife Park & Rescue Center in Pansol, where various animals are sheltered, including stray dogs.
As a TV host, Doc Nielsen educates viewers on animal health, and candidly talks about some of the challenges he faces when treating them. For instance, back in 2018, Donato and his team visited Camiguin Norte to respond to a distemper outbreak affecting the dogs in the area. In the same year, he conducted a veterinary mission to Calayan Island because there was a lack of access to veterinary care.
Most recently, Doc Nielsen flew to Bicol Region, to check on dogs and other animals that were left behind when people evacuated in the wake of Mayon Volcano’s sudden unrest. He said, “Our goal was to hold a mission for animals that were relocated, pets na iniwan sa bahay because they couldn’t be brought to the evacuation center.”
He added, “Top Breed helped out as well by donating the dog food that we fed to the dogs that were left behind.”
Caring for community dogs
For those who want to help the dogs within their community, Doc Nielsen’s advice is to contact animal welfare non-government organizations (NGOs), like PAWS, CARA Welfare Philippines, and Biyaya Animal Care. They can also coordinate with local government units (LGUs) to reach dogs in disaster sites.
“For all the animal lovers out there who want to help, there are established shelters where you can give dog food donations or monetary assistance for veterinary needs. In terms of disasters like [the situation in Albay,] you’ll need additional assistance from NGOs and LGUs if you want to do your own rescues,” he explained.
With the country being hit by multiple typhoons and other natural calamities each year, Doc Nielsen said he’s happy and proud of how far LGUs have gotten in terms of rescuing and responding to animals in danger. “There’s a complete difference compared to 10 years ago, where animals will only be rescued weeks later. I’m just so proud that the Philippines has matured in responding to animals’ needs,” he said.
“These animals, be it domestic pets or farm animals, are part of our lives. They’re important for every Filipino family.”
Doc Nielsen and his team are trying to build a world where kindness to animals knows no bounds and we can all be a part of it.
JFC and Coca-Cola group in full force. Photo shows the Jollibee Group team, represented by Ernesto Tanmantiong, President and CEO, Jollibee Group (sixth from left); Joseph Tanbuntiong, President, Head of Philippine Business and Head of Jollibee Global, Jollibee Group (8th from left); Dennis Flores, President, Regional Business Head, EMEAA (10th from left); David Beal, Chief Marketing Officer, Jollibee Group; and Jai Rastogi, Chief Procuement Officer, Jollibee Group (9th from left); with Coca-Cola team’s Reetima Rakyan, Coca-Cola, VP of Customer and Commercial, Asean and South Pacific (third from left); Tony Del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines and VP of Franchise East Cluster, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia (fifth from left); and Claudia Lorenzo, President of Asean and South Pacific Operating Unit (7th from left).
MANILA, Philippines. – The collaboration between Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) and Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) is a match made in food heaven, as bringing the joy of eating is to Jollibee Group what refreshing people with drinks is to Coca-Cola. Both are loved worldwide for bringing people consistently great-tasting food and beverages.
Through its 45 years in the industry, JFC has strived to only work with reputable suppliers that practice quality, safety, and sustainable business practices. “This is to continuously offer high-quality food with strict quality control measures to ensure that our food remains consistent, safe, and delicious, to meet the taste and standards of our customers across the globe,” said Jollibee Group President and CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong.
Among its valued partners, Coca-Cola has been supplying beverages to Jollibee Foods Corporation restaurants since JFC’s early years.
“JFC is one of our major customers and the depth and breadth of our relationship can be attributed to our shared values in delivering quality and innovation to our consumers. We appreciate JFC’s unwavering commitment to excellence and their genuine care for their consumers, employees, and communities,” said Claudia Lorenzo, President, Coca-Cola ASEAN & South Pacific.
As a long-standing partner of JFC for many decades, CCBPI, the bottling arm of Coca-Cola in the Philippines, is a proud supplier of a wide variety of beverages, including Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Sprite, Royal, A&W, and Minute Maid.
One of JFC and Coca-Cola’s key shared goals is in their efforts towards sustainability. The Coca-Cola Company is committed to making a difference and creating a better shared future through its brands, local business presence, and through sustainability initiatives.
On the other hand, the Jollibee Group has made significant strides over its 45-year history in various community projects, and is now integrating all its sustainability efforts into Joy for Tomorrow, the company’s Global Sustainability Agenda. This is a more cohesive framework that unites the Jollibee Group community, including employees, business partners, suppliers, vendors, and other stakeholders, toward a set of shared sustainability goals.
“We are serious in our commitment to bring joy to the lives of the people we serve, not only through our food but also, by helping create a better world to benefit generations to come. We believe that if we are able to harness knowledge from various sectors, combine it with our own resources, we can help build better communities where people will thrive together for the long term,” said Tanmantiong.
One established program that is part of the company’s sustainability agenda is the Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP), where small-scale farmers are trained and then linked to large institutions to buy their produce directly thereby increasing their income and livelihood immensely. “I’m happy to say that since the program began in 2009, over nine million kilos of produce have been delivered, which is equivalent to PHP411-million of revenue earned by the 700 smallholder farmers participating in the Farmer’s Entrepreneurship Program,” shared Tanmantiong.
The Coca-Cola Company, meanwhile, is making progress in Southeast Asia and globally on its World Without Waste sustainable packaging agenda, which includes the goal of collecting and recycling the equivalent of every bottle it sells by 2030.
“We are increasing the use of recycled materials in our packaging, partnering with local organizations to improve packaging collection and waste management, and innovating new packaging designs in support of a circular economy,” said Lorenzo.
Joint Dedication
The collaboration between the two world-class companies reflects its joint dedication to making a positive difference in the communities they serve.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jollibee Group provided food access amid the hunger problem in the country by giving food assistance – distributing more than 8.1 million meals to those most affected by the pandemic – through Jollibee Group’s FoodAID Program. Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc. supported the program by contributing much needed donations that helped provide food to hard-to-reach communities that were challenged by the lockdowns.
“We were proud to work with JFC during the challenging times of the pandemic, collaborating to supply beverages and food provisions to frontliners and local communities in the Philippines,” said Lorenzo.
The Jollibee Group, with the support of Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc., provided food access amid the hunger problem in the country by giving food assistance—distributing meals to those most affected by the pandemic—through Jollibee Group’s FoodAID Program.
As JFC marks its 45th anniversary this year, it is poised to build and sustain partnerships to fulfill its mission and vision of becoming one of the top five restaurant companies in the world.
“We are proud to support JFC’s growth and success in multiple countries across the globe. Looking ahead, we envision an even stronger partnership, expanding our collaboration to deliver an exciting line-up of great-tasting beverages across a range of categories while continuing to add value to all our stakeholders,” Lorenzo continued.
“This is what makes this partnership work. With Coca-Cola, we find that we have shared values and principles, and we are both in pursuit of serving delicious food and drinks to everyone while at the same time going towards the same direction of making this world a little bit better and a little brighter with joy,” Tanmantiong said.
Ginful employment for senior citizens and PWDs. Representatives from Jollibee Group, Antipolo LGU, led by Mayor Casimiro A. Ynares III (seated, middle), and Department of Labor and Employment-CALABARZON signed a memorandum of agreement for the reimplementation of Jollibee Group’s inclusive employment program in Antipolo City.
MANILA, Philippines. – A new batch of customer relations staff composed of senior citizens (SC) and persons with disabilities (PWD) will soon be serving customers again in select Jollibee Group-owned restaurants in Antipolo City as Jollibee Group and Antipolo City government signed a new agreement that provides jobs to qualified SCs and PWDs.
The initiative, which is part of Jollibee Group’s inclusive employment program, is a crucial step in the company’s thrust to foster diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
“Jollibee Group is committed to supporting programs that enable SCs and PWDs to remain engaged and productive members of our society,” said Ruth Angeles, Jollibee Group Vice President, and HR Head for Philippines. “We are happy to once again collaborate with the Antipolo City government and provide qualified SCs and PWDs the opportunity to join us in our mission of spreading the joy of eating to everyone.”
Jollibee Group and Antipolo City government started this partnership in February 2020, benefitting over 40 senior citizens and PWDs from various communities in the city. The program was discontinued due to the pandemic.
With this partnership renewal, some qualified 36 SCs and PWDs will be part of the first batch of beneficiaries and will be deployed in nine participating stores by the third week of August. The participating brands include Chowking branches in Unciano, Marcos Highway, and Oliveros; Burger King branches in Vermon and Antipolo; Greenwich branch in SM Masinag; and Jollibee branches in SM Masinag, New Lores Antipolo, and Antipolo Capitol.
The nine participating stores will conduct a sensitivity workshop among its store teams on disability awareness and inclusion to allow them to properly and effectively communicate, interact, and work with SCs and PWDs.
“This is an essential part of the program to ensure that everyone in the team can work in harmony and be able to leverage on one another’s strength,” Angeles added.
The signing of the memorandum of agreement was held last July 18, and was led by City Mayor Casimiro A. Ynares III; Maria Fe B. Iquin, Manager of Antipolo Public Employment Service Office; and Mary Ann Lim, Assistant Vice President and Greenwich HR Head.
Also joining them were Rizza Masupil, Greenwich Operations Director of Greenwich; Felmarie Jolo, Chowking Operations Director; Shelwin Hizon, Jollibee Operations Director; Lorlyn Cordero, Burger King Area Manager.
