During Christmas season, dispatching different goods and commodities from all over the world on time for a port is always important. At the end of last year, port congestion caused severe disruptions in global supply chains, and most stores were out of stock during the Black Friday and Christmas, the peak selling season.
To experience less dilemma like this, the innovation case from Tianjin Port might help.
Tianjin Port is one of the world’s largest ports. It has a 300000-ton-class wharf with a channel depth of -22 meters. It has 192 berths of various types and 128 berths above the 10,000-ton-class.
By the end of 2021, the port’s cargo throughput reached 435 million tons, ranking ninth in the world, while the container throughput exceeded 18.35 million TEUs, ranking the eighth port in the world.
The cost of manual operations at this scale is exuberant, both in terms of money and efficiency.
A typical port usually deals with vessel arrivals and departures, shoreside operations, horizontal transport, yard operations, manual tractor trailer transport, and gate operations.
One of the key steps in port digitalization is automating horizontal transport, that is, handling cargo within the port.
The Smart Port Solution uses the latest tech — intelligent twins, autonomous driving, 5G, cloud computing, and IoT — to create a better connected, smarter, and more autonomous system.
This smart terminal was built by Tianjin Port Group (TPG), together with Huawei and other partners, as part of its efforts to build a smart and green port.
One of the key innovative applications to address this is Huawei’s self-developed, truly AI-based intelligent horizontal transportation system, which has achieved a series of “world firsts”: Large-scale commercial use of ultra-L4 driverless, the world’s first “5G+BeiDou” integration of ubiquitous intelligence, the world’s first self-sufficiency in green electricity and zero carbon emission, etc. This achievement provides a blueprint for other parts of the world to build intelligent and low-carbon ports.
The results speak for themselves. On the port’s visitor platform at the container terminal at Section C of Tianjin Port, container cranes operate automatically and unmanned electric container trucks come and go. At the port, remotely controlled quay cranes stably pick up containers that are loaded with cargo from cargo ships, and load these containers onto unmanned electric container trucks. Under the guidance of the BeiDou navigation satellite system, the container trucks go to the automatic locking/unlocking stations, according the optimal driving route calculated in real time, to unlock the containers, and then drive to the container yard. The whole process is completed in one go.
The intelligent and digital transformation of the port has led to tangible benefits. Previously, transporting containers to container yards within ports requires a large number of container trucks. Using human drivers is very costly. Tianjin Port currently has 76 container trucks. To ensure 24/7 operations, each container truck needs three drivers working in three shifts every day. The port needs 60% fewer staff than before.
In addition, it is exhausting for truck drivers to drive on fixed routes in three shifts, posing an obvious safety hazard. Now, Drivers (who are in high demand) now operate trucks remotely and no longer have to face dangerous, unhealthy working conditions. And each container now consumes 20% less energy, cranes are 20% more efficient on average, with each crane operating 39 container units per hour.
The terminal of Section C in the Beijiang Port Area of Tianjin Port is the first smart terminal of its kind to deploy an intelligent horizontal transport system. Looking ahead, Huawei will continue working with partners to deploy and replicate this experience in more ports, building smart ports together.

Ortigas Malls kicked off its yearly Christmas tradition, the Greenhills Night Market at GStrip on November 4, 2022. The event was organized by Ortigas Malls to welcome the holiday season at Greenhills Mall, the ultimate destination for shopping, entertainment, and dining.
“Greenhills Night Market has always been synonymous with Christmas shopping and the opening signals the start of holiday preparations for everyone,” said James L. Candelaria, AVP, head of trade fairs & exhibits of Greenhills. “Generations of Filipinos grew up shopping at the Night Market with their parents and now with their own families.”
With this year’s theme “Merry Moments,” the Greenhills Night Market is the place to be where families and friends can share festive experiences during the holiday season. Adding to the merry mood are the colorful parols that illuminate the Night Market and the rest of Greenhills to welcome the many holiday shoppers.
The opening ceremony was attended by San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, who addressed guests, patrons, and sellers in his speech. He also explored the Night Market to check out the stalls and their wares. Ortigas Malls also spread Christmas cheer to children of Greenhills’ security maintenance and medical frontliners of Greenhills Mall by distributing gift packs as part of the program.
“Here in Greenhills, we are family, and that’s how we value one another. Nobody gets left behind and we all move forward,” Candelaria said.
The Ortigas family and the family of Mayor Francis Zamora at the Greenhills Night Market.
One of the Night Market’s main attractions are the food stalls, where visitors can enjoy a wide variety of cuisines after a long day of shopping. From grilled food to filling rice meals, and drinks, among many others. Families and friends can enjoy their meals comfortably at the al fresco dining area in the venue.
Shoppers can also find a plethora of affordable products at the tiangge. It has an abundance of locally made fashion apparel, Christmas decorations, toys, and so much more. It’s the ideal spot to complete their Christmas shopping.
Kids are welcome to explore the Night Market as well. There will be exciting carnival rides where parents can accompany them. Late-night visitors can experience a party-like vibe while checking out stalls with live DJs playing lively music. To amp up the holiday fun and add more color to their evenings, visitors can watch fireworks displays on all Saturdays of December.
Ortigas Malls kicked off the 2022 Greenhills Night Market. (L-R) Ortigas Land president and CEO Junie Jalandoni, Ortigas Malls VP Arch. Renee Bacani, Ortigas Land chief finance office Davee Zuniga, and VP and head of Corporate Resources & Horizontal Development & Estates Atty. Michael David Abundo III.
Ortigas Malls is expecting a large volume of people to visit Greenhills and the Night Market during the holiday rush. But Candelaria assured the public that all participating merchants are fully vaccinated and following strict health protocols. Security officers are also patrolling the area to ensure the safety of shoppers and that everyone is observing proper health procedures at the Night Market. Although wearing face masks outdoors and indoors is voluntary, visitors and mall goers are still encouraged to wear their face masks to ensure their safety.
“It’s time to make new Christmas memories and traditions at the Greenhills Night Market with your family this season, happy moments that they will always remember and pass on to the next generation,” Candelaria said.
The Greenhills Night Market will run from November 4, 2022 to January 8, 2023, from 4pm onwards at GStrip Parking. Live DJ performances and kids’ carnival rides will be there to entertain visitors every night. Fireworks displays are scheduled on all Saturdays of December.
After getting noticed for her empowering electronic pop/R&B anthems, Singaporean Filipina artist Ysa Yaneza is ready to step into the spotlight with the release of her self-titled debut EP, YSA.
The 4-track EP offers an honest and visceral look into the process of embracing her true, beautiful self while peeling away, one by one, the trauma and doubts that have come to define her past. It also contains songs that chronicle her journey towards heartbreak, reinvention, and womanhood.
The genre-melding project, which fuses Y2K pop with R&B vocal stylings, Caribbean-tinged beats, and retro-futurist soundscapes, is co-written by Ysa herself along with established collaborators in the global indie/electronic/bedroom music scene. Chicago-based musician and producer Shubu, co-wrote and produced Ysa’s current single “1Nightwitu,” while SOLRWAVE co-helmed “Jaded” and “Thinking Of You.” The whole EP was mastered by Stuart Hawkes, a sound engineer who has been nominated for a Grammy and worked on records by artists like Charli XCX, Disclosure, Lorde, and Mabel.
“For mastering, things didn’t go as initially planned but fortunately that led me to work with Stuart Hawkes,” the eclectic pop act shares. “I was looking up albums that I really liked from artists I would say influenced my sound and artistry, and that I wanted my songs and EP to have a similar sound direction, and I realized most of them had actually worked with Stuart Hawkes so it was a definite go for me.”
YSA stands out with a collection of chest-pounding tunes that brim with emotional sincerity and confidence. The carrier single “1Nightwitu” takes empowerment to an entirely new level, while encouraging her peers and contemporaries to value their self-worth. The island-tinged, dance-pop jam earned glowing reviews from the press, with NME praising the song for “sending out a message of female empowerment” and Nylon Manila calling it a “tropical house number” that “calls on women to embrace their sexuality.”
Other tracks on the album include “Thinking Of You,” a chilling slice of midtempo R&B that demonstrates the Singaporean-Filipina’s more sophisticated musical persona; “Jaded,” a mid-‘90s, Robyn-inspired tune steeped in the aesthetics and vernacular of a particular generation; and “Jewel,” an 8-bit pop tune that serves as a promo single.
“The songs I wrote in this EP describe certain parts of my life that helped me shape who I am today,” says the Softly artist. “Coming into womanhood, I think it’s important to remind ourselves that every single person has their own journey because as young women, we often feel pressure to be a certain way or meet certain standards. I wrote this EP for anyone who’s gone through heartbreak, gaslighting, toxic relationships but I also wanted it to serve as a reminder that you can blossom from these gloomy days, find your confidence within, and understand your self-worth.”
Ysa Yaneza will embark on a Manila press tour in November 2022 to promote her self-titled EP, and she will perform her first live show in Manila in December 2022 alongside Singaporean band, M1LDL1FE. Ysa has over 32,600 followers on TikTok thanks to her original skits, style, and personality that she shows off when she is not making music.
Unlikely collaborators Melody del Mundo (erstwhile singer for Sugar Hiccup), Wolf Gemora (former drummer for Wolfgang), and guitar whiz Robin Nievera (who’s now chosen to go by the mononym Nievera) have put out new music together as The Mellow Dees.
The dream-pop chanteuse, Pinoy metal alum, and six-string maven may make for strange bedfellows, but if “Lamán,” the maiden single they released on November 4, has taught us anything, it is that collaboration knows no age, genre, or creed.
Formed in 2019, the trio’s momentum hit a brick wall with the dawning of the global pandemic in 2020. But as they say, a good idea is worth pursuing, and in July of 2021, they reconvened for songwriting sessions and rigorous band rehearsals.
By New Year’s 2022, they have begun recording at Mack Sennet Studios at the Silverlake District of Los Angeles, California: the same hallowed halls luminaries of film (Martin Scorsese, David Lynch) and music (Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, John Legend) have worked.
Today, listeners the world over will get first helpings of the smorgasbord they have concocted for their debut record.
Lamán (cover art)
Lamán is perhaps the farthest thing from the individual members’ past material. A fusion of reggae, island pop, and kundiman (traditional Filipino folk ballad), the single sees a band cognizant of its roots but also dead set on innovation.
Describing the track as a “a serenade with a different approach,” the band further shares that the tune is “definitely a break from the usual,” being “a heavier and more upbeat track.”
Del Mundo is best known for her ethereal pipe work that harkens back to Cocteau Twins and bands of a similar ilk. Her most popular work with Sugar Hiccup (“Five Years,” “Moden De”) can arguably be described as “beauty beyond speech,” being literal gobbledygook set to sprawling, textural music.
Gemora, meanwhile, drummed on almost everything in the Wolfgang catalog, and was also in the short-lived outfit Lokomotiv with members of Razorback. His propulsive rhythm work served as soundtrack for fans of heavy music in Manila from the ‘90s to the early aughts.
Lastly, Nievera has paved a road independent of his pedigree, cutting records for majors and indies alike while showcasing his chops on guitar and songwriting. His playing is a vibrant intersection of blues rock (Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix), Latin (Carlos Santana), fusion (Eric Johnson), and modern (Prince, The Edge, Jack White, John Mayer).
Lamán, as well as the forthcoming full-length record that carries it, is being distributed by Lilystars Records in Manila. Of this exciting new collaboration, label head Clem Castro (Orange & Lemons, The Camerawalls, Dragonfly Collector) says, “It’s a welcome bit of happenstance to be working with legends in the local music scene. Surely a generation I can relate with, as it reminds me of my youth as a music fan.”
The Mellow Dees’ “Lamán” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Lilystars Records.

4 Batang Matibay Awardees who showcased how to be a Batang Matibay
Most Filipino families—regardless of social standing—believe that education plays a vital role in a person’s success. That’s why this year’s Balik Eskwela is different and more important for many parents and students. As young learners transition back to the new normal after overcoming the uncertainties and difficulties brought by the pandemic, Bear Brand is sparing no effort to inspire and encourage children to dream big and secure a better future for them and their families.
Recognizing exceptional students in the Philippines
Although every student made sacrifices and experienced difficulties in their studies over the past year, some kids faced harder challenges due to their everyday living situation. However, despite these obstacles, they have displayed their eagerness to learn and to overcome life’s adversities. Bear Brand has been honoring the strength and resilience of these young people since 2018 through the Batang Matibay Awards. Last October 27, the 2022 Batang Matibay Awards was held in Screening Room 1, Cinema Complex of Estancia Mall, Pasig.
Mr. Russell Lipchin, BEO of NESTLE Philippines, delivering his speech to all guests.
In partnership with the Department of Education, Bear Brand started the Batang Matibay Awards to recognize students who exhibited “tibay” in learning both in school and in life. This means not only do they show excellence in academics, but also the community and their families. Every Year, Bear Brand and DepEd call for nationwide nominations of ten Batang Matibay public school students from grades 5-6 who can serve as role models and inspirations to their families, school, and community.
2022 Batang Matibay Awardees
Bear Brand continues its commitment to building a generation of Batang Matibay by announcing this year’s Batang Matibay awardees. All of the 10 Batang Matibay awardees showed exemplary courage and strength to thrive despite their struggles.

One of those is the distribution of modules in his community and organizing feeding program for the Manobos.
Mark John Alayon from Roxas, Capiz is a model student despite his financial difficulties. His mother is a cancer patient while his father works as a construction worker. What all the awardees have in common is the lifelong learnings that are ingrained in them at their young age. Bear Brand wants to nurture their tibay ng isip, tibay ng katawan, and tibay ng kalooban and help them secure a better future by recognizing their efforts. In addition, with every glass of Bear Brand Powdered Milk, the awardees are provided with a holistic, Tibay Nutrition that will keep them strong while facing life’s challenges.
======== Profiles of the 10 Batang Matibay Awardees
Student Area Tibay Story
Jerald J. Pelonita
REGION VII / Guihulingan / Mandi-I Elementary School Despite being born without arms, he was hailed as Champion for the Division level National Art Contest because of this commendable skill in drawing and painting using his foot. He uses his talent and skills in drawing and painting to create harmonious moments with others. He advocates against bullying which he personally experiences to encourage and inspire children with or without disability to come out from their shells and radiate positivity in their hardest or saddest moment.
Jessca Solania
REGION XII / North Cotabato / Renibon Elementary School Jessca is a student at a last mile school in North Cotabato. She walks 8km and crosses 8 rivers just to go to school. She once had to cross the river despite strong currents, and she was found crying by the teacher – not because she was scared, but because she lost the only pair of slippers she has and did not want to miss school because of it. At her age she carries additional responsibilities to help their family because they don’t have her father by their side. Because of financial scarcity, there are days they would survive through boiled bananas for meal.
Despite these challenges, she shows resilience by exceling in school and extra curriculars.
Daryl Ashlei Teves
REGION V / Catanduanes / Virac Pilot Elementary School
She is an inspiration to the school/community as a consistent honor student since she was in 1st grade – excelling even in extra-curriculars (local/international math competitions). In addition to the brunt of the pandemic, the onslaught of super typhoon Rolly has greatly affected the educational system in Catanduanes – houses were destroyed, including the residence of Ashlei’sbfamily. But no matter how many storms she encounters, she always faces it head on. In fact, despite her personal struggles brought by the typhoon, not only did she continue to excel in school, she even helped in a relief drive in an orphanage, and also helped to tutor kids who were having difficulties in modular learning in Math. One of her tutees said that after being taught by Ashlei, Math became their favorite subject
Isabelle Lara Miranda
REGION IV-A / Laguna / San Pedro Central Elementary School
Isabelle does not allow her epilepsy to get the best of her. When she started schooling, she had difficulty writing as a side effect of phenobarbital, an antiseizure medication. To compensate for her slow writing and keep up with her classmates, she would usually skip lunch only to end up still being the last to finish. Some classmates bullied her, construing her feeble writing skills and occasional staring (seizure episode) as a sign of being inferior. However, she was relentless with her effort to prove herself. She remained positive until one day her hard work paid off, and she was finally recognized as one of the most outstanding students in class. She also became a champion of an oratorical contest despite going through an emotional crisis. Her terminally ill father was confined in a public hospital at the time, and eventually passed away days after the competition. She is always eager to take challenges and new tasks each time she shows a firm resolve to succeed. She carries an unfaltering faith and strong determination to overcome obstacles.
Matt Jayrus Evangelista
REGION IV-A / Batangas / Tibig Elementary School He grew up without a father, so her mother has to work abroad to support the family. Whenever he wants to talk to her, he would need to climb a mountain to get signal. He tries to help support their family by helping with little chores (creating broom sticks, collecting scraps as pig’s feed). While doing this, he still extends his help to his classmates who he helps with their studies.
He may have experienced some defeat in school competitions, but it doesn’t stop him from trying again. Rather it inspires him to be better “Sa susunod na pagkakataon, makakaya ko na yun.”
Cryzon Jay Ambinang
REGION XII / North Cotabato / Renibon Elementary School Cryzon belongs to the Manobo tribe who lives in a secluded area in a mountainside in North Cotabato. He walks more than 2 hours to get to one of DepEd’s last mile schools. Despite his own personal struggles, he excels in school and extracurricular activities, which includes being Vice President of SPG in their school that leads several projects in their school. Sean Geralyn Mara
REGION III / Bulacan /Muzon Elementary School Sean Geralyn has an older brother with autism, she personally takes care of her Diko and even researches some tutorial on YouTube on how to handle autism spectrum disorder cases. Because of her love for her brother she tried to teach him how to read, write, draw, and other basic skills. She wanted her brother to feel that he is an important member of their family.
Xoann Kyle Ocampo
REGION IV-A / Laguna / Chrysanthemum Village Elementary School His mother lost her job due to the pandemic which affected their state of life. Instead of being sad and despair, he came up with the idea of putting up their own snack bar to earn extra income. He’s been very involved throughout the process of building it – starting from brainstorming the menu, up to cooking and packing of orders. He himself created the design and logo of their snack bar. This micro business helpED them get back on their feet again. It also allowed Kyle to have his own computer that he uses on his study and journalism training/competition. He can break barriers because he is approachable and friendly. He can make others see their talents and skills because he is not afraid that someone can be better than him.
Marchilyn Guinahon
Region X / Misamis Oriental / Lantad Integrated School Marchilyn was infected with polio virus when she was little. Because of this, she is no longer able to walk. Her mother acts her feet in going to and from the school. Her struggles in life made her strong and dream to finish her studies to lift her family from poverty. Her willingness to go to school every day despite her condition, during pre-pandemic is a testimony to how strong her determination is in pursuing her education. Her positive outlook in life despite her physical struggles is very commendable. She has written 2 poems entitled ” Sa Gabay ng Tanging Ina” and “Physical Disability Never Stops me from being complete” depicting her life experiences.
Mark John Alayon
REGION VI / Roxas / Pres Manuel A Roxas Memorial School North He is consistently chosen as a homeroom officer and fulfills his roles beyond satisfaction.
