In a momentous collaboration, the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), and Rex Education, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), have joined forces to launch the COCOPEA–CEAP–REX MATATAG Curriculum Regional Run. Under the theme “Capacitating the Private Education Sector for the Effective Implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum,” this event brings together educators, administrators, and stakeholders across the nation to prepare and enhance their educational practices for the new curriculum.
A Unified Commitment with the Learners in Mind
At the heart of this initiative is a unified vision: to empower educators and schools with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively implement the MATATAG Curriculum, ensuring that it meets and caters to the needs of all Filipino learners.
The Regional Run opens up with a powerful act of unity—a commitment board signing. From the first run to the last, this collective resolve sees all participants pledging their dedication to the success of the Regional Run and the MATATAG Curriculum’s implementation.
The event focuses on three primary objectives:
Facilitate In-depth Understanding: Provide school leaders with a platform to delve into the key features, principles, and contents of the MATATAG Curriculum, fostering comprehensive understanding and appreciation.
Equip School Leaders with Implementation Strategies: Offer strategies, guidance, and inspiration to school leaders on how to effectively transition to and implement the MATATAG Curriculum within their respective institutions.
Foster Collaboration: Cultivate a network of educators and leaders committed to collaborative efforts in addressing challenges and maximizing opportunities presented by the MATATAG Curriculum.
All these objectives are carefully crafted with the learners in mind, aiming to enhance their educational experience and ensure their holistic development.
Insightful Plenary and Breakout Sessions
During the 2-day program, there are six engaging plenary sessions to provide comprehensive insights into the MATATAG Curriculum. These sessions cover key aspects, namely:
● The General Shaping Paper
● 21st-Century Skills in the MATATAG Curriculum
● Collaborative Expertise
● MATATAG Instructional Design Framework
● Learning Progression
● Operationalizing a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Focused on Enhancing Student Learning
Led by esteemed education leaders and representatives from DepEd, these sessions foster in-depth discussions on the key features, components, and relevant concerns of the MATATAG Curriculum, ensuring participants thoroughly understand how to implement these strategies effectively.
Aside from the plenary, participants also engage in 10 focused breakout sessions, each dedicated to the specific learning areas of the curriculum. The breakout sessions cover:

USANA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Usana Health Sciences, has built over 100 garden towers on the island of Malapascua, Cebu in pursuit of providing sustainable and accessible sources of nutrition. This initiative strengthens USANA’s broader mission to be the healthiest family on earth. Founded in 2012, USANA Foundation’s mission is to eliminate hunger and malnutrition globally.
Located at the northern coast of Cebu, Malapascua Island is a popular tourist destination, especially for divers, due to its crystal blue waters and rich aquatic ecosystems. The island spans 2.5 kilometers and has a width of 1 kilometer, making it easy to explore and allowing its citizens to foster deeper relationships among the people in the community. But beyond its beauty, there is an underlying problem of malnutrition rooted in limited economic opportunities and lack of accessible nutritional sources.
Guided by its mission to fight malnutrition, USANA Foundation brought their Garden Towers to the island. USANA Foundation’s Garden Towers is an innovative solution that provides sustainable, nutritious food for people all over the world. Each tower is made of durable material, can hold up to 120 plants, and uses 30 percent less water. Aside from being a nutritional source, the Garden Towers also generate income, promote self-reliance, and foster community collaboration and bonding.
“The people of Malapascua are malnourished because many of them do not have affordable access to quality nutrition. This project helps people have sustainable, accessible nutrition where they live, which will help improve their quality of life and health. That falls in line completely with USANA’s broader mission to be the healthiest family on earth!” said Brian Paul, USANA Foundation’s President. “Malapascua Island is a unique place with unique challenges, and we are eager to see how the families take care of their towers here”, he added.
Through the joint efforts of the USANA Foundation and Malapascua’s island leaders, families, and local businesses, tons of soil, seeds, plants, and watering tools have been transported to the island to make the Garden Towers come to fruition. Each tower is expected to yield approximately 3,000 additional servings of produce annually which would benefit the people’s overall nutrition.
GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance app and largest cashless ecosystem, and the Partnership for Development Assistance in the Philippines (PDAP), are working together to raise awareness on human trafficking and Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC).
Through its partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), PDAP’s Strengthening Local Systems and Partnerships for more Effective and Sustainable Counter Trafficking in Persons in the Philippines (Strength CTIP) project has collaborated with national government agencies, local governments, local non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to combat labor trafficking, online sexual abuse or exploitation of children (OSAEC), and the development of child sexual abuse or exploitation materials (CSAEM), as well as other forms of human trafficking.
The Philippine government and local non-government organizations estimate that 60,000 to 100,000 Filipino children are trafficked annually, while the prevalence of OSAEC and CSAEM has increased in recent years especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The pandemic also increased the number of unemployed workers, making them more vulnerable to labor trafficking.
The Philippines remains to be a Tier 1 country in the 2024 Trafficking in Persons report of the US State Department, acknowledging the efforts of the Philippine government in addressing human trafficking. However, much more can be done by involving the general public in combating human trafficking.
GCash users will see a pop-up on the GCash app, encouraging users to be aware of the problem of human trafficking and encouraging them to report any instance of human trafficking that they experience or witness.
“USAID and PDAP’s Strength CTIP Project looks forward to a strong partnership with GCash in the fight against human trafficking. GCash enables their 94 million users to learn more about the red flags of human trafficking and provides the means to report traffickers,” said PDAP Strength CTIP chief of party Eugenio M. Gonzales. “This collaboration highlights the private sector’s crucial role in addressing social ills.”
“GCash is committed to promoting trust and security, which includes the safety and well-being of all Filipinos,” said Atty. Maricor Alvarez-Adriano, GCash chief legal officer. “We recognize the power of our platform in amplifying important advocacies that directly affect vulnerable members of our community. We join our partners and other stakeholders around the world in raising awareness about the importance of putting an end to human trafficking.”
GCash has been a staunch advocate for safer online spaces and more secure fintech platforms for Filipinos. The company has been working with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to promote a safer and more secure cyberspace, especially for the most vulnerable sectors in the Philippines, which include women and children.
Instances or experiences of human trafficking may be reported via the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking at (02) 1343 or via www.1343actionline.ph or the Department of Migrant Workers at (02) 1348 or via repat@dmw.gov.ph.
