Manila Water Foundation, the social development arm of East Zone concessionaire Manila Water Company, in partnership with its Service Area teams, recently conducted a series of handover ceremonies to distribute Refrigerated Drinking Fountains (RDFs) across select cities in Metro Manila and municipalities in Rizal.
This initiative aims to promote hydration for better health, support solid waste management, and encourage the use of reusable water tumblers to reduce plastic bottle pollution.
The handover events took place at Taguig Integrated School in Taguig City, San Isidro Labrador Elementary School in Rodriguez, Rizal, and both the Philippine Science High School and University of the Philippines Integrated School in Quezon City.
A total of over 60 Refrigerated Drinking Fountains will be installed in 60 schools and public spaces, reinforcing the importance of hydration and the role of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programs in advancing health and nutrition outcomes.
To further promote sustainable practices, drinking kits were distributed to select learners during the ceremonies, along with hygiene info-education posters on the 7 Steps to Proper Toothbrushing and the 7 Steps to Proper Handwashing. These kits encourage the use of personal water tumblers, aiming to reduce PET bottle usage, contribute to cleaner waterways, and improve solid waste management.
This initiative aims to promote hydration for better health, support solid waste management, and encourage the use of reusable water tumblers to reduce plastic bottle pollution.
Key officials attended the ceremonies, including Rodriguez Rizal Municipal Vice Mayor Edgardo Sison and MWSS Regulatory Office Chief Regulator Atty. Patrick Ty, who underscored the importance of regulatory and service-area support for WASH initiatives.
Noel Balubal, Chief of the Schools Governance and Operations Department of DepEd Taguig-Pateros, expressed gratitude for the program, noting that Manila Water Foundation’s WASH efforts help expand DepEd’s initiatives in health and nutrition.
Through the Erceflora’s Batang Matatag campaign, boxes of Erceflora probiotics were also handed over to school leaders in Marikina City and Municipalities of San Mateo and Montalban as a support to manage diarrheal, gastrointestinal disorder on campus and to promote overall gut health.
The Lingap RDF Program is expected to benefit over 500,000 learners, teachers, and staff across Metro Manila and Rizal Province, providing reliable access to safe drinking water.
These turnover events also form part of Manila Water Foundation’s celebration of Manila Water’s 28th anniversary, showcasing its enduring commitment to WASH for all communities.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has been recognized with multiple international awards for its pioneering role in sustainable finance, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to responsible banking practices that create lasting impact for communities, businesses, and the environment.
At the Best Investment Banks and Sustainable Finance Awards by Global Finance, BPI was honored with the following distinctions:
Best Bank for Sustainable Bonds – Global Best Bank for Sustainable Bonds – Asia Pacific Best Bank for Sustaining Communities – Asia Pacific Best Bank for Sustainable Finance – Philippines
These accolades highlight BPI’s innovative ESG+E₂ framework, where sustainability is achieved when Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives translate into measurable economic (E₂) value. This model, which BPI has championed since the 1980s, drives inclusive growth while ensuring long-term benefits for all stakeholders.
The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) reaffirms its role as a pioneer and thought leader in sustainability, underlining its long-standing commitment to responsible banking and operations that benefit communities, businesses, and the environment. With a sustainability journey that began as early as the 1980s, BPI continues to lead by example, championing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices designed to create progressive economic value—an approach the Bank has coined as ESG+E₂.
At BPI, sustainability is achieved when ESG initiatives result in measurable economic (E₂) gains for all stakeholders. This innovative formula not only drives sustainable outcomes but also promotes inclusive growth, directly supporting BPI’s mission to build a better Philippines, one family and one community at a time.
“Sustainability is not a side initiative at BPI—it is deeply embedded in the way we do business,” said Eric Luchangco, BPI’s Chief Finance Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer. “Through ESG+E₂, we ensure that our sustainability initiatives generate positive real economic value, enabling progress that is both inclusive and enduring.”
“These awards validate our approach and reflect the collective effort of our teams to integrate sustainability across every aspect of our operations,” Luchangco added. “More importantly, they reaffirm that doing what’s right for people and the planet is also good for business.”
BPI’s comprehensive, Board-approved Sustainability Agenda guides the integration of ESG principles across its strategy, operations, and risk management framework. This Agenda is anchored on two strategic business pillars: Responsible Banking and Responsible Operations.
Under Responsible Banking, BPI consistently designs and offers financial solutions that integrate ESG criteria into lending, investment, and advisory decisions. These solutions aim to support economic development while delivering long-term benefits to clients, communities, and the environment. Whether through green financing, sustainable bonds, or inclusive financial products, BPI ensures that sustainability remains at the core of its client relationships.
In parallel, Responsible Operations ensure that the Bank responsibly manages its environmental and social footprint in day-to-day activities. From energy efficiency initiatives to sustainable procurement practices, BPI actively reduces its impact while promoting ethical and efficient operations across the organization.
Supporting both pillars are robust systems in Corporate Governance, Compliance, and Risk Management, ensuring alignment with local, national, and global standards—including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These mechanisms act as vital checks and balances in the implementation of the Bank’s sustainability objectives.
BPI Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala has long championed these efforts and was recognized globally in 2017 as one of only ten Corporate Champions of the United Nations SDGs, the only Filipino to date. His leadership underscores the Bank’s commitment to sustainability at the highest levels of governance—a commitment that continues to shape BPI’s strategic direction.
Filipino-Ghanian artist Jewel Owusu has dropped the music video for “spark.”
A visual companion set in the haze of a late-night club, the MV follows Jewel Owusu navigating the crowded dance floor, barely keeping up with the frenetic energy and the people around her.
According to Owusu, the video evokes the sensory experience of being in a club but completely alienated from its lively, bustling vibe. “It’s one of those nights where you show up, but you’re not actually having a good time. You’re caught in your own head while everyone else around you is on a completely different wavelength. It feels as if you are moving through space in an alternate reality.
A notable motif woven throughout the music video is the recurring imagery of a mouse—a symbol Owusu has revisited across her work.
“To me, it symbolizes feeling small, finding ways to survive, and moving quietly through spaces—themes that often reflect my experiences,” shares the Australian-based electro-pop newcomer. “Lately, people have even been saying that mouse girl winter is in full swing, which I love because it shows that the idea has grown beyond me and taken on a life of its own.”
With “spark,” Jewel Owusu continues to carve out a distinct voice in contemporary electro-pop, one that thrives on vulnerability and refusal to conform to expectation.
“spark” will be part of Jewel Owusu’s upcoming new EP, set to be released sometime this year. Late last year, she captivated audiences with the propulsive but minimalist track “Time Machine,” which features acclaimed Filipino singer-songwriter and producer ena mori.
About Jewel Owusu
Jewel Owusu has always felt like she lives in the space in between—between sounds, between cultures, and between versions of herself that are constantly shifting.
As a Filipino-Ghanaian artist and producer, she’s forging a new path in alternative electronic pop—one that’s as unfiltered and dynamic as she is.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in New Zealand, Jewel’s music is a melting pot of influences. Combining elements of electronic, dance, indie pop, rock, and more, her sound blends every experience that inspires her.
Now based in Melbourne, Australia, Jewel has been garnering eyes through international shows, showcases at SXSW Sydney and Music Matters in Singapore, national tours, and an overflowing headline show.
She has been recognized as an artist to watch, won Triple J Unearthed’s collaboration competition, and caught the eye of major outlets such as Rolling Stone, Complex, Colors Studio, MTV, Triple J, and TikTok.
In Jewel’s world, music and visuals are more than just art—they are spaces for transformation and self-expression, where imperfection is not only welcomed but celebrated.
MANILA, Philippines — Hanabishi Appliances recently donated livelihood starter kits to 10 nanaypreneurs (women who manage small karinderya (small eateries)) and 2 health coordinators in their communities as part of its newly launched Kapartner sa Kabuhayan corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.
“At Hanabishi, we believe in empowering mothers who not only serve as the light in their homes but the backbone of their communities as well. By providing them with the appliances they need through our Kapartner sa Kabuhayan, we hope to enable their small businesses to grow and thrive and thereby support Filipino families in building sustainable livelihoods,” said Cherish Ong-Chua, Hanabishi Appliances VP for Finance and Marketing.
The donation was conducted in partnership with Kabuhayan sa Ganap na Kasarinlan Credit and Savings Cooperative (K-COOP) as part of its Project Karinderya, a collaborative initiative focused on supporting karinderyas and low-income families in the Philippines.
“Partnering with K-COOP allows us to help both the food providers and the families they serve, creating a cycle of nourishment and livelihood,” Ong-Chua said.
The beneficiaries were identified through K-COOP and come from Camarin and Bagong Silang in Caloocan, and Lagro in Quezon City. Each of them received a Hanabishi Karinderya Starter Kit, which includes a Hanabishi electric fan; gas stove or oven toaster; rice cooker or pressure cooker; water dispenser or hand mixer/blender; and coffee maker or airpot.
A Collaborative Effort
Hanabishi’s support was made even more impactful with the help of partner-organizations like SEAOIL and BiotechJP. SEAOIL provided SEAGAS LPG tanks and BiotechJP donated Ready-to-Eat Rice (Rice to GO).
“We are grateful to our partners for supporting us in this project. Having like-minded organizations with us allows us to provide more help to those in need,” said Ong-Chua.
The turnover took place on August 4, 2025 and we personally handed out the items to all 12 beneficiaries, with representatives from Hanabishi, K-COOP, and SEAOIL present. BiotechJP provided their ready-to-eat rice products at the K-COOP Camarin branch.
More About Hanabishi’s Kapartner sa Kabuhayan
At the heart of Kapartner sa Kabuhayan is Hanabishi’s commitment to empowerment, sustainability, and collaboration. The program is built on the belief that when small business owners are equipped with the right tools, training, and support, they can create lasting change for their families and their communities. By working together with K-COOP, SEAOIL, and BiotechJP, Hanabishi hopes to build a stronger network of resilient and independent nanaypreneurs across the country.
“Hanabishi is actively exploring further collaborations with K-COOP for livelihood and community development programs. Beyond this, Hanabishi is planning more initiatives under the Kapartner sa Kabuhayan campaign to benefit micro-entrepreneurs across different regions,” Ong-Chua said.

A shared mission on hygiene, nutrition, and gut health helps shape more resilient learners across public schools.
For many Filipino students, school isn’t just a daily routine—it’s a step toward a brighter future. But behind every recitation, exam, and school day is something just as important: health, specifically gut health.
This shared understanding brought together the Manila public schools, Manila Water Foundation, and Erceflora Probiotics in Mandaluyong City to launch the “Hygiene and Gut Health Talk.” The program equips teachers and health officers with tools and knowledge to promote hygiene and wellness inside and outside the classroom.
“A child’s health is directly tied to their academic performance,” said Ramilo Pascual, School Head at Senate President Neptali A Gonzales Integrated School. “If a student is unwell, whether due to malnutrition or poor gut health, it affects their focus, attendance, and ability to learn.”
For Manila public schools and Manila Water Foundation, gut health is no longer just a side topic—it’s a pillar of better education. And with Erceflora now at the heart of this mission, they’re making sure support reaches the students who need it most.
“At Erceflora, we believe that gut health is essential to overall wellbeing. For children, a healthy gut helps them feel their best every day, so they can stay active, focused, and ready to learn and thrive in school,” said Rica Mateo, Erceflora ASEA Zone Brand Lead. “By supporting programs that combine education, hygiene, and access to practical solutions, we hope to empower more schools and communities to put student wellness first.”
“When students have access to clean water, good hygiene, and support for gut health, they’re more likely to stay in school, stay focused, and excel,” said Nix Hipolito, Program Education Section Head at Manila Water Foundation. “That’s why collaborations like this matter—they help turn health into a strong foundation for learning.”
Reaching the Schools That Need It Most
School nurses and teachers agree: many students miss class or struggle to focus due to gut-related issues—often caused by poor hygiene, skipped meals, or dehydration.
“Stomach pain is one of the most common complaints we see,” shared Mateo. “When students are uncomfortable, it’s hard for them to concentrate, and sometimes, they have to miss class. Having Erceflora probiotics in the clinic really helps support their recovery and keep them in school.”
To help address this, schools are receiving probiotic donations—giving school health professionals a quick way to respond to digestive complaints, while also equipping teachers and staff with gut health education they can pass on to students and parents.
“At Manila Water Foundation, we want to make sure that Erceflora’s generous donation creates the greatest possible impact,” said Nix Hipolito, Program Education Section Head at Manila Water Foundation. “Through today’s activity, we’re reaching six Manila public school divisions—Mandaluyong, Marikina, Pasig, Quezon City, and Taguig-Pateros—benefiting over 300 elementary and secondary schools. This strengthens our WASH programs by ensuring both resources and knowledge go hand in hand.”
To make the biggest impact, Manila Water Foundation and its partners are focusing efforts on public schools and school divisions that need the most support. With handwashing stations, drinking fountains, and improved hygiene facilities now in place, Erceflora takes the initiative one step further—helping students stay well enough to be consistently present and ready to learn.
“When schools have access to safe water, proper sanitation, and probiotics, everyone on campus benefits—students, teachers, and the whole school community,” said Nix Hipolito.
From Advocacy to Action: Gut Health is a Community Effort
For years, Manila Water Foundation has been leading hygiene education campaigns, but even with strong awareness programs, students in underserved areas lack access to practical health solutions.
“Our hygiene program promotes oral health, handwashing, and proper sanitation—all closely tied to nutrition and gut health,” shared Nix Hipolito. “This collaboration propels education into action. If our campaigns raise awareness and are the ‘software,’ probiotics such as Erceflora are the ‘hardware’ that brings our advocacy to life.”
For the school, the initiative goes beyond donations—it catalyzes behavior change. “This partnership is a real blessing,” shared Ramilo Pascual. “Not all schools have the same resources, especially in children’s health. Together, we create a healthier learning environment.” And it’s not just the schools that benefit. When parents are also engaged in the discussion, the lessons learned in school can be reinforced at home, creating lifelong habits that benefit the entire community.
“Probiotics like Erceflora can play a meaningful role in supporting student health, especially when combined with proper hygiene and access to clean water,” Mateo concluded. “It’s a simple, practical way to help keep students healthy and in school, even with limited resources.”
This joint effort proves that gut health isn’t just a wellness issue—it’s an education issue. When students feel better, they learn better. With clean handwashing stations, health talks, and access to practical tools like trusted probiotics, students are empowered to take charge of their well-being, so each one can become healthier, more focused, and more productive in school and beyond.
