The first one-of-a-kind exhibit of precious bonsai trees in pots, viewing stones, and ikebana arrangements and workshops by Masters of the craft is all set at Sanib Pwersa, a show that puts the spotlight on over 200 bonsai trees, suiseki viewing stones, and ikebana creations. It’s also the first time these three Japanese art forms and culture will be featured in one big Philippine show.
This exhibit would be held at The Block Atrium, SM North Edsa from March 22 to 25, the show promises to be the biggest, grandest, and most attended exhibit because of its lineup of distinguished lecturers – National Bonsai Association of Taiwan Bonsai Master Amy Liang, Bonsai Master Kunio Kobayashi from Japan, Bonsai Master Yen Zi Jing from Taiwan, Bonsai Master Wu Jian Zhang from Taiwan, Expert on Viewing Stones Thomas Elias from USA, Expert on Viewing Stones Hiromi Nakaoji from Japan, and Ikenobo Professor Romeo Balderrama, Jr. from the Philippines.
Through the continuous efforts of SM Supermalls, in partnership with The Philippine Bonsai Society (PBSI) and major organizations such as the Natural Stone Society of the Philippines, and Ikebono Ikebana Society of Manila #67, nature lovers can experience yet another ‘green’ malling experience.
SM and PBSI continue to hold events in support of their shared advocacy for the environment. Just last month, a memorandum of agreement was signed by SM Supermalls and PBSI officers so that all PBSI shows and exhibits will be held exclusively in SM malls nationwide.
The show is open to the public, so don’t miss out on learning something new about the wonder of Bonsai, Ikebana and Suiseki from experts!

Following its successful turnout last year, Ortigas Company launched the 10-day Ortigas Art Festival to assert their commitment to bringing arts and culture closer to the people.
Now on its second year, the exhibit continues to put its efforts towards establishing Estancia as the art hub of Ortigas. This year’s approach brought individual artists to the spotlight, showcasing their creative individuality and placing them at the forefront of the art scene.
It was the idea of Renato Habulan, renowned social realist painter, to tap the various groups of artists from all over the country and give them a venue to exhibit their works. Ortigas Malls was receptive to the idea of promoting grassroots participation in the art scene.
No gallery representation – just artists working together; no admission charge for the viewers– walk through the art for free.
Among the featured artists is master engraver Benjie Torrado Cabrera, the only engraver in the country specializing in this laborious, centuries-old medium. His works, which are complex in detail, are inspired by his interest in cosmology, with geometric shapes and spheres that signify the universe.
Another one to look out for is Darwin “Japat” Guevarra, a self-taught artist inspired by the works of masters and his peers, showcases works that reflect his concepts of life and social realism, expressed through his mastery of the paintbrush, sculpting, photography, and experimenting with scrap and molded materials.
Also in the spotlight is photographer Bern Wong, with her camera that has captured the most moving meditative and breathtaking landscapes she has seen encountered in her travels. Her works express the minimal, abstract, and even the surreal aspects of places she visits.
Make sure to check out the works of Richard Buxani, an architect who has since harnessed his talent to create sculptures made out of metal. Inspired by Ronald Castrillo, Richard
Also joining the art festival are artists from all over the country, whose works mirror the great talent of Filipino artists. The roster includes AgawXena, Agos Kulay Maynila, Banta Artist Initiative, Himbon, Biskeg, The Guild, Group Artists of Taytay, Association of Pinoy Printmakers, Hilaga, and Westgrove Fine Arts.
To create a more interactive and immersive art experience, various activities have also been lined up, which visitors can join for free. On February 23, master engraver Benjamin Cabrera shows his prowess in print-making. For those interested in watercolors, watercolor artist Peter Sutcliffe will hold tutorials on February 24 and March 2. On March 3, Renato Habulan introduces guests to Print Alla Prima with the Master. Throughout the festival, the public is also encouraged to participate through the “Comment Areas” where they can share their thoughts and opinions to let the artists know how their works are perceived.
The rapidly-evolving festival has already grabbed the attention of various artists from across the globe, including some from New York, Los Angeles, and Singapore who want to become part of this movement– a sign that bigger and better things will come about in the coming years for Ortigas Art Festival.
Ortigas Company is delighted to see that support for contemporary Philippine art has been growing. As part of our commitment to the arts, we are holding the second run of this art festival in the hope that this will increase appreciation for the creative individuality of artists. By holding this in Estancia, we are also making art accessible to Filipinos, especially for our mall patrons and the Capitol Commons community,” concluded Arch. Renee Bacani,VP of Ortigas Company.

One of my early childhood dream was to able to learn how to paint landscapes. My dad taught me a few techniques on how to draw but I never got around learning how to properly capture every detail of my subject and this is why I stick to photography instead. But this does not stop me from admiring the work, artist put on every masterpiece they make.Every visit at the museum or art exhibit always leaves me in awe.
From August 27 to September 24, 2017 in celebration of the Mid Autumn Festival, the Chan Lim Family of Artist and Students have prepared 135 hand painted fans at Sm City East Ortigas. The exhibit is joined by 42 artist showcasing their rich culture and artistry. Through this exhibit I was able to learn how Chan Lim painted those lovely fans using different brush strokes through live demonstration and guidance of his students.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists is best known for their Asian-themed art with particular focus on Chinese brush painting. The family has been actively engaged in the arts for more than half a century to date. The three generations of Chan Lim Family use a multitude of media, styles, and techniques to incorporate Western into Eastern art. They continue to get involved in the arts by actively developing and promoting Chinese brush painting in the Philippines and abroad.
Chan Lim, the family patriarch, originally uses oil and watercolor in his artworks. He usually uses canvas to paint his masterpieces. Recently, he ventured into using other types of medium such as ceramic and porcelain plates, Asian lanterns, and fans to blend Western and Eastern painting techniques. On the other hand, the second generation of Chan Lim family–Alex, Felix, Rolex, and Jolex–are all engineers by profession and are engaged in leadership positions with multinational companies. While they are engaged in business, the siblings are also into painting.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists has traveled extensively across the Philippines to conduct numerous art exhibits, classes, workshops, seminars, and on-the-spot painting demonstrations. Several thousands of people have attended the activities that they have organized. The entire family is always in support of their travels, both locally and internationally. Now, the third generation of Chan Lim family is now into exploring modern art techniques, such as digital media and mobile apps, and incorporating them into their unique and signature art style.
The Chan Lim Family is that they create art which do not exclude any form of media to showcase their talent. Over the years, they have continuously pushed the envelope on the type of media used for the Chinese brush. Their art subjects have included flora, fauna, landscape, and even human portraiture. These themes can be seen by the family’s signature art, on which they also passed on the style and technique to their students. The family is one of the few remaining notable Chinese brush painting artists in the country today and because of this, they are sought-after to exhibit and teach people in using Chinese brush in painting. Their current studio is located in Pasig City and their art works can be found in private collections all over the world.
