SM City Marilao and SM City Baliwag earn PH’s official Safety Seal in the province of Bulacan.
“The safety seal is everything to us because it affirms our commitment to safe malling and our strict compliance to safety and health protocols set by the government” shares SM City Marilao Assistant Mall Manager Engr. Janette Aguilera.
According to Marilao Municipal Administrator Wilfredo Diaz, PH’s Safety Seal is granted to building and establishments that are compliant with the Minimum Public Health Standards (MPHS), including the adoption and use of accredited contact tracing app. He also added that the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to stop the surge of COVID19 while assuring people that the said establishment is safe.
Marilao Licensing Officer Martin Armando Cruz explains that PH’s Safety Seal certification program is a Joint Memorandum Circular 21-01 (JMC 21-01) signed by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Health (DOH). Implementing guidelines of the Safety Seal Program requires enforcement of Minimum Public Health Standards (MPHS) such as health declaration and non-contact temperature check on all individual who enters the premises, using of accredited contact tracing app/system, availability of handwashing stations and sanitizers, observance of physical distancing and good ventilation in enclosed areas. Proper wearing of facemask and face shields as well as regular disinfection and sanitation of high-touch surfaces are also among other requirements.
After thorough onsite assessment and evaluation, safety seal tags for both SM City Marilao and SM City Baliwag were issued by representatives from the Local Government and Business Permit and Licensing Offices (BPLO) of each town.
“We are happy that all our efforts were recognized. With the “Safety Seal”, we hope to increase people’s confidence in visiting our malls as health, safety, and well-being of our shoppers and employees always remain to be our top priority” says SM City Baliwag Mall Manager Rodora Tolentino.
The SM malls in Marilao and Baliwag are among the first recipients of Safety Seal in Bulacan.
Members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) last April 23 have encouraged consumers to patronize business establishments with Safety Seals.
As more Filipinos shift to online shopping for their daily necessities, many businesses are also turning to digital platforms to widen their reach and establish a strong online presence – especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). To cater to the growing number of online sellers, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, continues to partner with organizations to support MSMEs who are looking for better opportunities in e-commerce.
In 2020 Unilever and Mano Amiga, a non-governmental organization that advocates for community transformation and inclusive growth through education, first partnered with Shopee for their Beauty That Cares Campaign, to offer assistance to 25 micro-entrepreneurs. Through this partnership, Mano Amiga sellers gained a strong understanding of e-commerce and learned how to maximize the digital space’s full potential. Sellers had access to monetary funding, entrepreneurship training programs, and Shopee’s e-commerce tools to help them expand their reach. Two Mano Amiga sellers share how Unilever and Shopee supported their business growth:
For Janette Lagundi, a mother of two, it was tough when she first started her online business. Despite having no prior entrepreneurship experience, she decided to start selling cleaning products and home decor items such as Himalayan salt lamps, to get her family through the pandemic. She admitted that it was difficult for her to adjust to selling on e-commerce platforms as she was not very tech-savvy.
Through learning the ropes at Shopee, Janette saw her business thrived. “Because of Shopee, not only are my sales increasing, my store is also gaining better recognition through plenty of promotions. I learned a lot about selling online through the training programs and masterclasses. I am determined to explore more opportunities on e-commerce, and I’m glad that Shopee and Unilever helped me adjust and adapt amid the pandemic,” she said.
She added that the support from Shopee and Unilever helped her family immensely. “This business is my bread and butter and I feel more confident in growing my business because I am more competent now. Because of this opportunity, I can provide for my children.”
Cecilia Comia used to run a food business and even designed her own food stalls, but due to the pandemic, she had to shut down her food business and focus on selling decal stickers and labels instead. “We started our business in 2018 with a passion for good design and we wanted people to appreciate and see how small design details can change an entire product or experience,” she said. The strategy shift, although promising, posed some obstacles. “The competition is tough online. Reaching a wider audience and achieving effective customer engagement are both constant challenges. We are still struggling when it comes to establishing our business. The prices of our competitors are tough to match,” she added.
Shopee and Unilever provided her with the much-needed support. “Unilever’s program connected us with Shopee. It gave us an edge in terms of knowledge in selling online. Unilever’s financial assistance also helped us with our cash flow and allowed us to increase our stocks and improve our equipment.”
To support the transition and growth of MSMEs in the digital landscape, Shopee partners with Unilever once again to give MSMEs a spotlight at their Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17 to 19, 2021. The campaign is part of Unilever’s renewed purpose and commitment to bring about positive change through real actions – to do more good, not just less harm, for people and the planet.
Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “We are proud to partner with Unilever to support a cause that aims to uplift the lives of local sellers and their loved ones. Shopee believes that every Filipino entrepreneur can succeed in e-commerce as long as they have the right tools, opportunity, and platform. We will continue to collaborate with brands like Unilever to support the local communities, their livelihood, and their families.”
Dorothy Dee-Ching, Vice President for Beauty and Personal Care at Unilever Philippines, said, “Yes to Positive Beauty is a movement for all Filipinos to champion a new era of beauty and personal care that’s inclusive and sustainable. As the number one beauty and personal care company in the country, we acknowledge the part we play in being a force for good, and Yes to Positive Beauty encompasses our commitment to do this through our brands. This includes championing for equal opportunities, which we have been able to do through our continued partnership with Shopee and Mano Amiga, as well as lending a helping hand to MSMEs, especially those greatly impacted by the current crisis.”
To provide consistent support for the sellers, Shopee’s relationship managers worked closely with them to create irresistible discounts to attract more customers, and also assisted them in mapping out advertisements for their products via social media. With the sale happening in just a few days, both sellers are preparing to stock up on their inventory to meet the expected increase in demand. To support sellers like Cecilia and Janette, check out the Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17 to 19, 2021.
The COVID-19 health crisis has laid bare the vulnerabilities in global health systems. In countries like the Philippines, where millions live below the poverty line, the gaps in the healthcare system are more acutely felt.
In February 2019, the passage of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law signaled hope for the sector. The UHC Law strengthened efforts of the Department of Health (DOH) and its attached agencies to provide Filipinos access to quality and cost-effective care. The law was quickly put to the test when the pandemic hit, underscoring the urgent need for more resilient health care in the Philippines.
Against this backdrop, Health4All, a coalition that unites healthcare experts and engaged citizens was formed.
Health4All opens inroads for collaboratively designing health outcomes for Filipinos, with a focus on providing underprivileged and underserved communities with support and access to better health decisions and opportunities.
Speaking at the Health4All media event, M. Fabrice Fize, Head of Mission and First Counsellor of the Embassy of France in Manila, emphasized that building vaccine confidence as among the coalition’s focus areas is critical in meeting the country’s goals in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases. “In front of this health crisis, we
have to reaffirm our commitment in strengthening the health systems of the most vulnerable countries, with a view of achieving universal health coverage.”, said Mr. Fize. He expressed the strong support of the French Embassy to the coalition Health4All and congratulated its multi-stakeholders and community-based approach.
Fize was joined by a panel of health experts and representatives from the private and public sector. Speakers included Dr. Alfonso Regala, Head, Program Implementation and Outreach Division, Health Promotion Bureau of DOH, Dr. Tina Alberto, Founder, Hope in Me Club; Dr. Dexter Galban, CEO of digital healthcare company Alaga Health; and Mr. Jean-Antoine Zinsou, private sector representative and General Manager of Sanofi Pasteur.
“When we talk about health promotion, we talk about creating environments where people know how to keep themselves healthy, and where people are able to act on that knowledge. This is where the different sectoral partnerships come in,” explained Regala.
Zinsou highlighted the role of the private sector in making healthcare accessible to all. “We believe that this spirit of shared responsibility and mutual concern will drive transformation in our health system,” he said. Echoing the health department’s call to bolster multi-sectoral support for Universal Health Care, he added that “the private sector is committed to supporting the DOH’s efforts to make health for all Filipinos a reality. We look forward to working with the coalition in strengthening our healthcare systems, providing support for healthcare workers and equipping citizens with useful and relevant health information.”
Alberto showcased how community health organizations like the Hope in Me Club, whose roster of volunteers include healthcare workers and patients, bridge the various programs of the DOH to the community through integrated health education programs. She adds that “we should also recognize that our patients are not mere recipients of information. We should also treat them as advocates for health and they can also be our champions for vaccination and health.”
Meanwhile, Galban championed young people and SMEs in his presentation. He noted that when young people’s access to health care is compromised, the Philippines’ future is compromised as well. “Our economy is primarily fueled by the young working-age Filipinos who significantly contribute to production, commerce, and growth,” he explained, adding that the Philippines today has the largest generation of young people in history, with over 30 million young people between the ages of 10 to 24. At least one million young Filipinos will be entering the workforce in 2021. “Young people today understand the importance of health literacy and access to health care.”
Carlos Hechanova, Executive Director for Development of makesense Philippines, the Lead Coordinator of Health4All, stated that “central to our approach is building people-powered solutions for health issues. It’s important that our platform is able to equip and empower ordinary citizens to act. We emphasize that the expertise and knowledge that communities and their leaders have is equally valuable as the support from our medical specialists, and that through this movement, we can properly harness both to drive social change and a holistic recovery.”
Health4All’s recently-concluded pilot program, a youth initiative for health literacy, was able to reach 50,000 new advocates, online and offline, through 11 different campaigns. The pilot focused on crucial health areas such as building vaccine confidence in communities. It also responded to health challenges heightened by the pandemic such as elevated strain on mental health, increased risks for patients with lifestyle diseases, and “infodemic” or the overwhelming amount of accurate and inaccurate health information.
To date, the coalition has worked with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), University of Philippines – Manila, Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV), RTI International, Doctors to the Barrios, the Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians (PSPHP), Healthcare Professionals Alliance Against COVID-19 (HPAAC), Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes, and the Philippine Red Cross. BPI Foundation, the social development arm of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), today launched its 7-year running business challenge called “Sinag Spark 2021”, part of the BPI Sinag program that aims to nurture, develop, and empower the local social enterprise (SE) sector.
The BPI Sinag program was introduced in 2015. While it was initially conceived as a business challenge for SEs, it has now evolved into a growing ecosystem (over 180 SEs) that continues to bring together not just the country’s visionary entrepreneurs, but also mentors, investors, and other stakeholders who share the same goal of achieving inclusive and sustainable growth through social entrepreneurship.
“We live in a vast and complicated world and it needs our cooperation and commitment to do all we can to ensure a better and brighter tomorrow for future generations,” said Owen Cammayo, BPI Foundation Executive Director. “As part of our commitment, we aim to shed light and give hope – give a Spark to our struggling social enterprises (SEs) who, in spite of the pandemic, continue to pledge their cooperation by focusing not just on profit, but also on people and planet.”
This year, the program continues its partnerships with social impact organizations such as Bayan Academy for Social Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Development, Endeavor Philippines, Start-Up Village, and Villgro Philippines, as well as BPI Direct BanKo, the microfinance arm of BPI. For the first time since its conception, BPI Sinag has also partnered with Ayala Land, a subsidiary of Ayala Corporation, to help expand the market access of SEs.
In the “Sinag Spark” business challenge, 40 SEs will be included in the shortlist, of which, 20 will move on to the finals. Out of the Top 20, 10 social enterprises who are best able to showcase their business viability and social impact will be named the BPI Sinag Spark awardees. Aside from exclusive mentorship opportunities, the awardees will also receive cash grants amounting to P300,000 for the top five SEs and P100,000 for the rest.
BPI Foundation will provide Sinag SEs with an MBA-like experience through virtual mentoring sessions, which will include sessions on business strategy and planning, marketing, operations, finance, organization & HR development, and social innovation, among others.
New resources, opportunities
According to Mr. Cammayo, the publication of a book on social entrepreneurship is among the many exciting activities and initiatives lined up for this year’s BPI Sinag program. “We will be publishing our second BPI Sinag Book later this year to document and share more of the best practices and inspiring stories of growth from the BPI Sinag community members,” he said.
“We will also be working on a National SE Strategy Paper to engage the public sector in supporting the development of social entrepreneurship across the country,” he added. With the help of BPI Sinag’s program partners, the collection of case studies and impact assessments on social enterprises will serve as the primary sources for crafting a national strategy for social enterprise development in the Philippines.
Open for applications
BPI Sinag Spark is open to social entrepreneurs who are 18 years old and above and leading a registered social enterprise that has been operating for at least six months.
Interested applicants may check the complete eligibility requirements via https://www.bpifoundation.org/page/bpi-sinag. The application period will run until July 6, 2021.
