A united vision. The founding partners of QBO Innovation Hub, the country’s first public-private initiative for startups, were all present for QBO QNNECT: The QBO App
Launch, the official unveiling of a virtual hub developed by QBO with the vision of uniting the Filipino startup ecosystem in the digital sphere. (From L-R: Secretary
Fortunato “Boy” de la Peña, the Department of Science and Technology; Katrina Chan, Director, QBO; Assistant Secretary Rafaelita “Fita” Aldaba, the Department of Trade
and Industry; Patricia Javier-Gutierrez, Executive Director and Head of Communications, J.P. Morgan; Diane Eustaquio, Executive Director, IdeaSpace Foundation Inc.; and Rene “Butch” Meily, President, QBO.)
Having a sense of security and be able to relax in our own home is an utmost priority. Even on our own businesses or work place we always make sure to safeguard the facility with only the best equipment. Last March 15, 2018 at Blue Leaf Filipinas, I attended the Kwikset Roadshow Manila 2018 and learned how finding the right lock and door knob is the best choice for every household. I personally use Kwikset on my gate lock and have proved of the brand’s lock durability. Dave Albert, Vice President and Managing Director of APAC Spectrum Brands Inc welcomed everyone by discussing the company’s history , commitment to delivering unmatched security features to homeowners and puts our customers’ safety above all else by manufacturing 250,000 door locks per day.
Kevin Sander, International Brand Manager spoke about the company’s unwavering commitment to meeting homeowners’ needs has inspired its innovative lock portfolio that includes patented Smart Key Security™ deadbolts, key-less entry combination locks, connected home technology, first-to-market electronic lock, Kevo™, door hardware with Microban® antimicrobial product protection and a wide variety of styles and finishes.
The brand’s history started in 1946 Adolf Schoepe and Karl Rhinehart revolutionize residential lock design by pioneering a tubular lock—named “Kwikset” to underscore its speedy installation. We were toured into 3 stations to experience how secure, stylish and durable Kwikset locks and door knobs are.
The first station for my group is the style station, where we learn how each lock and door knob was designed to fit any household. There was some clay molds that was provided that have been used as an inspiration for the aesthetics of the Kwikset products.
Kevin Sander, International Brand Manager showed us how durable Kwikset products are by soaking 2 door knobs in ammonia for 10 minutes. I was impressed because the other brand already corroded while the Kwikset door knobs are still the same when it was first taken out of its plastic container and there was no sign of chemical damage.
We all watched some movies wherein the house lock is easy to pick and open and that is what I dread will happen to my own house. The third booth was with Alvin Tan, Asia Sub Region Product Marketing Manager of Spectrum Brands Inc, who discussed the features of the Smart Key Security™ deadbolts, key-less entry combination locks. and the electronic lock, Kevo™, door hardware with Microban.
Sander demonstrated Kwikset’s deadbolt quality by trying to cut it using a saw and tried to cut it in half. The quality of the deadbolt did not bulge even with a hammer and that is why we should always consider re keying or changing into a more innovative brand like Kwikset. What I learn from this roadshow that no locks are the same and we should not be afraid to spend for our safety with a more durable, flexible and aesthetically pleasing choice like Kwikset.
QBO Innovation Hub, the country’s first public-private initiative for startups, recently launched the QBO App, a virtual hub for startups all over the country. The QBO App has already garnered over 100 downloads on the Google Play Store. The app is also available for download on iOS.
The program was headlined by the top-tier leaders of QBO’s public and private partners and attended by over 200 guests from the startup ecosystem, including notable founders and entrepreneurs, mentors and investors, and representatives from various Technology Business Incubators (TBIs), startup enablers, incubators, and corporations. Some notable guests included local startups like Cropital, Pushkart, and Tripkada. The event was also attended by top executives from QBO’s public and private partners, including Ola Almgren, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Chaye Cabal Revilla, CFO of Smart Communications, Inc.; Gil Chua, Chairman and CEO of DDB; and Monchito Ibrahim, Undersecretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
The lineup of speakers at the launch included QBO’s founding partners, such as Secretary Fortunato dela Peña of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST); Assistant Secretary Rafaelita Aldaba of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI); and Roberto Panlilio, Senior Country Officer of J.P. Morgan Philippines.
The QBO App is a virtual hub or a digital space where startups and entrepreneurs can come together to connect and collaborate with other players in the startup ecosystem and contribute their own knowledge and information with the community. It is an extension of QBO’s on-ground efforts to unite and empower the local startup ecosystem to work towards the same vision of Filipino startups changing the world.
“QBO App’s prime purpose is to connect the dots in the local startup ecosystem, not just for startups in Metro Manila, but for Philippine startups, investors, and collaborators all over the world. It’s an avenue for Filipino startups’ ideas to move forward,” said Katrina Chan, Director, QBO.
Rapid growth
“What makes our platform so strong is that there are so many passionate and dedicated individuals in the startup ecosystem and this is the platform they’ll be using to connect with each other,” added Chan.
“The app’s growth is a testament to the worthiness and effectiveness of its mission. It’s a more convenient and accessible way to stay on top of the startup ecosystem, whether
you’re a founder, mentor, or investor. It’s also very appealing to some of the younger Millennials who seek to establish themselves in the startup industry, as it’s a user experience that they’re more familiar with,” said Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, DOST Undersecretary.
QNNECT, QLLABORTE, QNTRIBUTE
The QBO App is designed with the following functions in mind: QNNECT, QLLABORATE, AND QNTRIBUTE.
The app’s QNNECT feature allows founders to get in touch with other players in the industry and form partnerships. Through the app, mentors and investors can also discover new businesses and other potentially disruptive investments. “One of the more important aspects of the QBO program as well as this new app is that it provides members with easier access to world-class mentors, business leaders, and other entrepreneurs who’ve thrived across industries. This collaborative environment and sharing of best practices builds and strengthens even further the local startup community,” said Patricia Anne Javier-Gutierrez, Head of Communications at J.P. Morgan.
The QLLABORATE function allows members to see what startup events, opportunities, and programs are happening when and where. Startups can also better collaborate with
each other and reach out to special guests or speakers through the app’s ‘Groups’ feature. Members can also access relevant resources through the app, such as startup reports, government forms, powerpoint presentations from speakers, and other documents that are all downloadable exclusively in the app through the ‘Content’ function.
Much like other social networking sites, the QBO app is also the perfect avenue to QNTRIBUTE. Startups can share news or push their products and services through the News function, where they can post videos, photos, links, or other startup-related content in a social media-like timeline.
How to download the app
The app can be found on either Google Play Store or the App Store. Search for “QBO Innovation Hub”. After downloading, register through e-mail, cellphone, or Facebook.
Users will have to wait for their membership approval from the QBO team. Once approved, they can create their profiles and begin to QNNECT.

This March, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, commemorates National Women’s Month by celebrating the success of Filipina entrepreneurs in the Philippines.
According to the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) 2018, opportunities for women to succeed in the Philippines are abound. The country ranks first in Women’s Advancement Outcomes with strong female representation in business leaders, and an equal inclination for both men and women to engage in entrepreneurial activity. In fact, the Philippines is one of only three countries worldwide where the number of established business owners among women is higher than that of men .
This growth in the number of female business leaders and entrepreneurs in the Philippines is mirrored in the growing e-commerce scene, as more women opt to start their own businesses online. In 2017, Shopee saw a 158% increase in the number of female sellers on boarded compared to 2016. Of the female sellers on boarded last year, 50% are Preferred Sellers – a title given to sellers who have attained commendable shop ratings and have displayed excellent customer service.
“We are proud to recognize and celebrate the success of Filipina entrepreneurs who have displayed outstanding business acumen and strength of character. Shopee remains committed to supporting local entrepreneurs in the Philippines, and we look forward to seeing more women take the step towards entrepreneurship by building their businesses online,” Agatha Soh, Head of Regional Marketing of Shopee. In celebration of Filipina entrepreneurs in the month of March, Shopee presents the stories of 3 inspiring women who chose e-commerce as a way to delve into entrepreneurship and build a successful career.
For Shopee seller Rhea Kristine Dumo, a small capital did not deter her from starting an online business. With just P2,000, Dumo started her online store and managed the business on her own – from sourcing products, to coordinating with buyers and packing orders – all while taking care of her daughter as a stay-at- home mom. By selling a variety of toys and gifts for children, Dumo was able to buy her own house at the age of 28, and more importantly, spend more time with her daughter. “That’s one thing that money can’t buy but Shopee can give – freedom to manage my own time.” said Dumo. Rhea now employs five full-time employees and two part-time student employees to manage Martipaps Gift Shop.
25-year- old Arcel Monnette Mangubat chose to sell online as a way for her to pay for her wedding, start a family and attain long-term financial stability. As a first-time
entrepreneur, Mangubat chose to start her business selling women’s apparel on an e-commerce platform in order to reach a greater number of customers and easily scale up her business. “The convenience and security provided by Shopee, along with its large customer base, allowed us to grow the business and eventually buy a motorcycle, build a house, and fund our wedding. We are very thankful for Shopee,” said Mangubat.
Owner of the Shopee shop Makeupholics, Melanie Sta. Maria, witnessed key improvements in her business since she joining the platform in 2015. Already an established seller on other online platforms, Melanie joined Shopee to take advantage of the in-app logistics system to easily manage her inventories and marketing campaigns. With around 1,200 orders per month, Melanie successfully grew her business and was able to comfortably provide for her family. “Not only has Shopee provided me with a secure platform to grow my business, it has also helped me achieve my dream of purchasing a car for my family.” Sta. Maria shared.

The Imagine Cup is a global competition that empowers the next generation of computer science students to team up and use their creativity, passion, and knowledge of technology to create applications that shape how we live, work and play. And for the past 16 years, the Imagine Cup has been the worlds premier student technology competition. Every year, tens of thousands of students from across the globe compete for cash, travel and prizes and for the honor of taking home the Imagine Cup.
The Philippines National Finals showcased the best teams from the country as they pitched and demoed their ideas to experts to vie for a coveted spot at the Imagine Cup World Finals where they will compete with the best and brightest teams from across the globe for the title of World Champion, up to $100,000 cash prize and the chance to take home the Imagine Cup.
Philippines Finals
In the Imagine Cup PH Finals held in Makati last March 5, five teams competed for the title of national winner, P50,000, and the chance to represent the Philippines in the Imagine Cup Regional Finals in Kuala Lumpur. The national final was won by Team Onyx, composed of Computer Engineering students from Technological Institute of the Philippines. All team members share a passion for technology. Daniel Soriano, 18, is an active student leader for their program and is an active member of the Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Student Edition – T.I.P. Quezon City Chapter. Romie Santiago, 20, is currently taking Embedded Systems track, and is adapting knowledge of hardware and software integration projects. Kyle Regino, 19, like Romie Santiago is also pursuing Embedded Systems track. She is interested in studying how things work, and use that to create new things that could help others.
Collectively, Team Onyx channeled their passion for technology and desire to help others to innovate the use of mobile applications in the field of medicine. The result is Bionyx — a mobile app that scans and analyzes fingernails and helps individuals easily identify diseases related to the liver, heart, lungs, and the blood. Bionyx was built on the idea that our fingernails serve as a visual advertisement to our health. In fact, our fingernails could reveal diseases related to the liver, heart, lungs, and blood. Bionyx seeks to be a catalyst for early diagnosis for much bigger health problems we may have. Captured images are analyzed on Microsoft Azure across multiple data sets for accurate and timely analysis.
Asia-Pacific, and then the World
Team Onyx will travel to Malaysia to compete at the Asia Pacific Finals. Winners from all Asia Pacific countries will join this stage. Asia Pacific Finals will be held on 2-5 April 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Next after is the world stage of the Imagine Cup which, in 2010, Philippines By Implication dominated and won. The World Finals will be held in the end of July 2018 in the United States of America. For Team Onyx, this is the goal — to make the World Finals and compete with the best and brightest teams from across the globe for the title of World Champion, up to $100,000 cash prize and the chance to take home the Imagine Cup.
How Does Imagine Cup Work?
Students are asked to create an original technology project from start to finish – from ideation and planning, to building the project and making it an actual product. In previous years, the teams compete in the Games, Innovation or World Citizenship categories; however, for 2017, all categories have been removed from the competition, allowing any big idea to be a qualified entry, with the only requirement being that teams must integrate Microsoft Azure, Azure is Microsoft’s open, flexible, enterprise- grade cloud computing platform, into their solutions.
Students advance through various rounds of the competition either online or through in-person National Final events organized by Microsoft subsidiaries across the globe. This year, 11 countries will be sending their National Champions to the Asia-Pacific Finals, where the World Finalists teams are determined. Winners in this round will then travel to the Imagine Cup World Finals, where they compete for cash prizes, and once-in- a- lifetime experiences.
Since 2003, the Imagine Cup has successfully served as an incubator for young innovators who create solutions to help their communities. The competition allows students from across all disciplines to team up with each other and use technology to build applications, games, and various solutions that can impact the world.

Today, digital technology is pushing people, businesses, and governments to rethink the way they work and operate. In the banking and financial industry, fintech companies are disrupting conventional methodologies and introducing innovative products to cater to mobile and connected customers that demand state-of-the-art digital services.
Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) is in the midst of a digital shift as it pursues a three-point plan. This aims to transform its operations with digital technology, put up a digital bank, and engage fintechs in catering to the local market.[1]
As part of its endeavours, UnionBank has partnered with Microsoft to conduct blockchain trials on Azure.
“Similar to our mission to empower every person and organization to achieve more, UnionBank is committed to making lives better and enriching the lives of Filipinos through greater financial inclusion. We stand together in the belief that financial service institutions need to ramp up digital transformation efforts to engage users and transform products,” said Hans Bayaborda, Managing Director and Country General Manager of Microsoft Philippines.
Blockchain for greater financial inclusion
A recent BSP survey found that 86 percent of Filipino households remain unbanked.[2] Blockchain can push for greater financial inclusion by allowing financial institutions to provide accessible, useful, and affordable products and services that meet client needs. Whether it’s transactions, payments, savings, credit, or insurance, these can be delivered in a responsible and sustainable way via blockchain.
Arvie de Vera, Head of Fintech at UnionBank, said: “Blockchain technology will revolutionize financial services, and more so in a context like the Philippines where financial inclusion is such a challenge.”
Blockchain is transformational technology that brings down the cost to serve the mass market. At its core, it is a form of data structure used to create a digital transaction ledger that, instead of resting with a single provider, is shared among a distributed network of computers.[3] This promotes financial inclusion by:
Modernizing legacy banking infrastructures. With blockchain technologies, banks can increase efficiencies by addressing the settlement process across the board. Speeding payments, trading of all financial instruments, and automatically outputting regulatory information will massively disrupt the industry and shift labor into better customer service.
Securing transactions.Blockchain technology offers secure transactions through an encrypted ledger. This addresses cyber threats by establishing authenticity and tamper-proof record systems. The decentralization of the command systems in blockchains is critical to safeguarding cyber security.[4]
Azure – a secure blockchain platform
UnionBank is currently conducting and has had successful blockchain trials on Azure.
As an open, flexible, and scalable platform, Azure supports a rapidly growing number of distributed ledger technologies that address specific business and technical requirements for security, performance, and operational processes. Microsoft’s data and AI solution provides unique off-chain data-management and analysis capabilities not offered by others. The vast Microsoft partner ecosystem extends the capabilities of UnionBank’s platforms and services in unique ways that fit specific workload and industry needs.
Azure is secure and provides a rapid, low-cost, low-risk, and fail-fast system for organizations to collaborate on by enabling them to experiment with new business processes—all backed by a cloud platform with the largest compliance portfolio in the industry.[5]
“The Microsoft partnership has also been about sharing best practices and experiences. UnionBank is grateful to have the guidance of such a technology leader—one who has also undergone its own transformation,” de Vera said.
Revolutionizing PH banking
As a tech-savvy organization, UnionBank is embracing digital transformation through its strong culture of innovation and leadership. It is the first bank in the Philippines to pursue blockchain trials.
“It’s an exciting time. The arrival of blockchain in the Philippines is groundbreaking and can revolutionize the financial services industry and lead to greater financial inclusion in the country. As the first bank to pursue blockchain, UnionBank is making big strides in its digital transformation, and Microsoft is committed to helping them make Filipino lives better,” said Bayaborda.
Hiring and Job-hunting activities are both set to increase in 2018
Manila, February 27, 2018 2018 is supposed to be a good year in the Philippines job market, with those employers and talents expressing an optimistic view in relation to their hiring and job search activities, according to this year’s JobStreet.com job outlook report.
The report, now on its second year, asked companies of their job market outlook in 2018. On a 7-point scale, employers averaged a 5.01 showing an increase in outlook optimism versus 2017, while candidates maintain their optimism at 4.68.
This positive sentiment among employers and candidates is backed by indications of increased hiring and job-hunting activity, as 60% of Philippine company claim to be expanding and hiring a more personnel, while 88% of talents will be either monitoring the job market or applying for jobs in 2018. Confidence among employers is also seen in the increase in job postings, which experienced a 14% increase year-on year and is driven by growth in the top three hiring industries – call center/IT – enabled services, retail, and manufacturing.
While candidates also managed to display a more positive outlook, they expressed concerns about their job-hunting journey, saying that increased competition in their fields and diversification of skills and jobs are most likely to happen, signifying that searching and applying for good job opportunities may be more challenging to them this year.
The study also revealed another cause for candidates to be more active and searching for better opportunities this year – the benefits they most prefer or not necessarily offered to them by their present employers.
Close to 80% of candidates pointed to health and medical insurance for themselves and their dependents, but only 52% claim to enjoy it. On the other hand, 86% listed family care leave as there most desired form of time-off, but only 13% enjoy this type of leave benefit.
“While more candidates see themselves to be participative in the job market this year, companies are also foreseeing robust hiring activity, which means the competition to attract and retain top talent will be more vigorous. What will make or break employers this year is how attentive and primed they are to address the emerging needs of employees,” said Jobstreet.com Philippines country manager Philip Gioca.
