Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is a booming industry in the country, giving the second-highest revenue contribution next to OFW remittances.
The business is known to be non-discriminating in their hiring; opening their doors and offering large paychecks to undergraduate, disabled, and older applicants who would have otherwise been limited by their age and situation. Despite the lucrative opportunities in the fast-growing BPO sector, the benefits often come with health issues due to unusual working hours employees must hammer through.
Risky business
Two years ago, the International Labour Organization for Asia-Pacific released a study enumerating the many challenges workers face in the “Sunrise Industry”—health concerns consisted of high levels of stress, fatigue, eye strain, headaches, and chest and back pain. Aside from physical strain caused by stress, people who work in contact centers experience intense pressure and emotional stress too from strict sales quotas and clients who would lash out at them over negative calls.
Oftentimes, the high pay offered in exchange for unusual working hours entices breadwinners to turn a blind eye on their health in their intention to better support their families with a more stable source of income.
Meanwhile, in a recent initiative with an American multinational corporation, the Department of Health (DOH) noted that to counteract the negative effects of work-related stress and lack of sleep, contact center employees often indulge in unhealthy lifestyles. As fast food restaurants, bars, and convenience stores are the only sources of food open during their work hours, agents also don’t have enough options for healthy meals. Fatigue and exhaustion discourages them from being active, having them opt instead for sedentary lifestyles and easier ways to commute or go to work.
Making the right investments
To improve employee health and wellness, most BPOs partner with Health Management Organizations (HMOs) in introducing wellness programs to address the mental and physical needs of employees. They also integrate gyms into their facilities to give their workers easy access to tools that encourage active lifestyles.
This crucial service by HMOs provides healthcare services to the BPO worker but addresses sickness and immediate needs when they already fully manifest. However, BPI-Philam CEO Surendra Menon notes that those who work in BPO are often breadwinners seeking to secure their families and extend benefits to them as well.
“As these initiatives are certainly beneficial to BPO workers, employees must also consider for themselves investing in solutions that will help look out for their health, while preparing for their family’s welfare too,” said Menon.
“Working hard and wanting to provide the best for the family is innate,” he said. “However, no one should ever work too hard that they are taking their health for granted.”
To Menon, health protection through insurance is just as much a priority as living healthy lifestyles to continue providing for the family. A good solution to address both needs is a unit-linked health and life insurance plan that protects the life, secures and helps improve the health, and builds the wealth of its insured.
“When thinking of insurance, BPO workers might first consider solely getting health insurance because they think that’s all they will need, but that only gives them help with one issue. They can consider instead getting a policy that works more for them with the premiums they pay. Something affordable but comprehensive enough to cover their specific health and life protection needs.”
Innovative insurance products that will work best should build for the policy owner a health fund that accumulates over time to support future health needs. It will also provide cash benefits for the insured if they are diagnosed early on with critical illness.
Should they experience major disability or illness, the policy should ensure continuous life protection coverage, even in the event of non-payment of premiums upon diagnosis so that the insured can focus on getting better without any worry or financial burden to him or his family.
“It’s also better if the policy comes with additional benefits to the owner,” said Menon. “Preparing for uncertainties with insurance is one thing but taking impactful steps toward improving your health betters that preparedness.”
One good option is Critical Care Max. With this unit-linked product, life and health protection is provided to the policy owner with riders available to personalize its coverage further. Integrated with the company’s wellness program Philam Vitality, it extends to the insured steps they can take to know and improve their health, allowing them to earn points to enjoy exclusive rewards from Philam Vitality partners. It also gives the insured an upfront additional 20% coverage.
“The only thing Filipinos working in the BPO industry should keep in mind when looking for solutions is its fit to their needs,” said Menon. “Quality insurance need not be expensive or solely focused on addressing one challenge, often the most effective answer is the one that not only helps you, but also your family.”

Soil erosion and degradation, land abandonment, and lack of interest in farming. These are just some of the many issues that affect the Banaue Rice Terraces.According to the local government of Banaue, around 600 hectares of the site is abandoned, contributing to its deterioration. This places the Banaue Rice Terraces at risk of being removed from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In response to this, the Banaue Rice Terraces
Restoration Project was formed. The project targets to restore and conserve the biodiversity and cultural practices at the site. One component of the project is to generate widespread public awareness and participation to the cause, and one of the initiatives to support this is the Banaue International Music Composition Competition (BIMCC).
After months of preparation, 20 composers from all over the world are heading to Banaue to see the world-famous Banaue Rice Terraces for the first-ever BIMCC. The 10-day immersion trip is meant to showcase the Ifugao culture and bring their issues closer to the composers for their deeper appreciation and understanding.
“The Banaue Rice Terraces is more than just a breathtaking view. It is home for a community fueled by their culture,” stated General Jaime de los Santos, Project Manager of the Banaue Rice Terraces Restoration Project. “The area has faced a host of challenges in recent years, and we aim to bring it back to its full glory through the Banaue Rice Terraces Restoration Project. We recognize that there is much work to be done and what we’re doing is just a start. Through BIMCC, we want to call attention to the scale of the challenge and how the public can show support through a celebration of music and culture.
” The competition called for Banaue-inspired symphonic compositions and received an overwhelming response from composers all over the world, generating 84 entries. Following screenings and deliberations, 20 composers were chosen to go on an immersion program in Banaue, where the top 10 finalists will be chosen at the semi-finals to be held at the Banaue Hotel. The chosen pieces will then be performed by an orchestra at the Grand Finals Night at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on July 25,2018.
“Through music, we are sending a strong message to the public and the world about the beauty and culture of the Banaue Rice Terraces. We hope to draw out attention from Filipinos to help restore our famous World Heritage site and the ecosystem that thrives in and around it,” shared BIMCC Artistic Director Professor Chino Toledo.
“All the Banaue-inspired compositions that we received from composers from all over the world signify how different cultures can relate to and work on a common goal of preserving an international treasure, as well as the diversity and rich heritage surrounding it,” added Toledo.
Helping out Filipino farmers and the agriculture sector has been a longtime advocacy of Universal Harvester, Incorporated (UHI). UHI President and CEO Dr. Milagros O. How.
“Our work on the Banaue Rice Terraces Restoration Project also calls attention to the need for greater support to the agricultural sector. UHI formed our advocacy arm under TOFARM to push for the advancement of the Philippine agriculture and to recognize farmers as the country’s heroes. Through these activities, not only are we unlocking potentials and boosting productivity, but also preserving our heritage as Filipinos,” explained Dr. Ong-How.
The first BIMCC Grand Prize winner will receive US$12,000 and two runners-up will each receive US$6,000. The public can further support the cause by getting donor seats at the Grand Finals. Prices range from Php1,000 to Php5,000. Proceeds from the event will be used for the benefit of the projects to rehabilitate and restore the rice terraces starting at the Barangay View Point,Banaue, Ifugao.
The Universal Harvester. inc.,in cooperation with the Municipal Government of Banaue launched the 2018 BANAUE International Music Composition Competition on November 16,2017. The Competition, which called for Banaue-inspired symphonic compositions, was opened for both local and international composers. By April is 2010, 84 entries were received from the Philippines. Chile, Spain, the United States, Israel, Italy Slovenia,Germany, China,Japan, South Korea,Belarus, Canada, Finland, Malaysia, Russia, Australia. Greece, Norway,Cyprus,Sweden, Singapore, Brazil, Cambodia. Hungary, Germany, Poland, lndonesia,Thailand,Ukraine,Austria, and Armenia.
Dr. Milagros How,Chairperson of the Banana Rice Terraces Restoration Project noted,‘We were overwhelmed by the response to our call for entries. This proves the fact that music is, indeed, a perfect medium to promote awareness and advocacy for our beloved Rice Terraces which has been declared a UNESCO heritage site.’ For the first time, a musical competition of this magnitude is launched in the Philippines. From 84 entries, 20 Semi-Finalists/Composer-Fellows were selected and invited to participate in an intensive immersion Program in Banaue on July 9 to 20, 2018. During this period, they will tour major sites in the area and attend inter-active workshops to familiarize themselves with the culture, music, and traditions of the lfugao and other Southeast Asian Music cultures.
With diverse perspective and inspiration, the Composer-Follows may further enhance their entries before the Semi-Final competition. ‘Communing with the terraces is an important and necessary aspect of the competition. This is the only way by which the composer can resonate his or her music with the subject: Banaue Mayor Jerry Dalipog pointed out. The 20 Semi-Finalists will be further trimmed down to 10 Finalists whose compositions will be played and performed by the TOFARM Festival Orchestra with BlMCC Artistic Director. Prof. Josefina Chino Toledo. Conductor, during the GRAND FINALS CONCERT to be held on July 25, 2018 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
The Judges for the Semi-Finals are Prof. Kee Yong Chong and Dr. Verne de la Pena and for the Grand Finals. Dr. Chinary Ung. Dr. Ricardo Lorenz, Prof. Isao Matsushita, and National Artist for Music. Dr. Ramon P. Santos. The Grand Prize Winner will receive U512.000,while two Runners-up will each receive $6,000. It is the organizers’ hope that through this international music event. A greater awareness will evolve towards generating more advocates for the restoration efforts. We want the world to know that the Philippines is home to great wonders that Inspire artists from all over the World to pursue their craft, be it in music, poetry,or cinema. With the support of our friends from media, we will be able to take the first stop towards bringing back the glory bestowed upon the Banaue Rice Terraces as the Eighth Wonder of the World: Dr. How stated. Proceeds from the July 25 Concert will go towards executing, implementing, and sustaining the action plan to restore and rehabilitate 628 hectares of damaged sections of the rice terraces, starting at Barangay View Point in Banaue.

We at the Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI)—composed of one hundred and thirty-two (132) corporation-members and thirty-eight (38) industry associations from across the country—find it unfortunate to learn of a new proposed labelling measure against sugar, which is a consumer good that has weathered, and continues to bear, its fair share of challenges, at the expense of a several concerned industries.
We cannot help but observe that the government is singling out sugar yet again with this planned move. Sugar is an important ingredient in food and beverages, with many in the manufacturing (food and beverage) sectors relying on it, and it does not deserve to be put in a bad light by measures such as this.
We renew our suggestion to the government to instead adopt a content-based taxation scheme versus a volumetric approach, which is the current nature of the SSB tax, instead of making new measures about labelling. Again, the volumetric tax is essentially a tax on water, rather than sugar. If we really want to address health concerns, a content-based taxation scheme is what the government should consider instead of new regulatory measures. Content-based taxation levies a higher tax rates on beverages that have higher sugar content versus those that have lower sugar content. It will encourage companies to produce and/or reformulate drinks with less sugar—thus fulfilling the law’s supposed mandate as a health measure.
Moreover, the government should also reconsider the tax imposed on non-caloric sweeteners. If the tax on sweetened beverages is indeed a health measure, then the government should remove the taxes on non-calorics as they pose an added burden to seniors and to those watching their sugar intake. It is ironic that although seniors are provided a senior citizen discount, the more senior-friendly non-caloric refreshments are imposed with an excise tax making them too expensive for seniors to enjoy.
FPI and its member-companies have always been committed to transparency, and this extends to providing clear nutrition information in the packaging of our products for our consumers. As such, we at FPI support labelling on goods that adheres to high standards of transparency and factuality. Rest assured that we comply with all of the government’s existing regulatory requirements on nutrition and content labelling. Companies follow a thorough and rigorous approval process, which involves governmental oversight. All labels are submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval, who also review substantiation for claims, nutrition information, ingredients, and so on. The FPI takes seriously all government regulations—we pride ourselves as a collective of transparent, accountable, and law-abiding companies that strive for the betterment of our industries.
If this planned labelling measure succeeds in moving forward, then the Department of Trade and Industry will have failed in its mandate of promoting equitable trade environment and the welfare of industries—something that we as an organization and as concerned industry players wish to avoid. As such, the FPI is eager to work with the government in coming up with fair and equitable solutions to this proposed problematic measure.
